We interviewed Md. Ishan Arefin Hossain. Md. Ishan Arefin Hossain completed his Bachelor’s in Computer Science and Engineering from BRAC University in 2018 with the highest distinction. Afterwards, he earned the prestigious “British Council GREAT Scholarship” and completed his Master’s in Computer Science from Teesside University in England in 2022. Professionally, he started working as a full-time faculty member at a university in 2019. To learn more, read his interview:
First, could you tell us about yourself?

I completed my Bachelor’s in Computer Science and Engineering from BRAC University in 2018 with the highest distinction. Afterwards, I earned the prestigious “British Council GREAT Scholarship” and completed my Master’s in Computer Science from Teesside University, England, in 2022. Since 2019, I have been working as a full-time faculty member at a university. Alongside teaching, I am deeply engaged in research. Recently, as a Principal Investigator, I received a research grant from the North South University Conference Travel and Research Grant program. Additionally, I have served as a reviewer for several journals and conferences, and as a judge in national-level artificial intelligence competitions.
What is your research topic?
My main research area is “Edge Intelligence.” Simply put, I work on applying artificial intelligence through devices like smartphones, smartwatches, or other small computational gadgets to various aspects of daily life—such as disease diagnosis, health monitoring, or helping people with disabilities navigate their surroundings—by developing relatively lightweight and less complex machine or deep learning models.
How do your research projects benefit or have the potential to benefit us?
In a recent project, my team developed a method to provide real-time, uninterrupted support and guidance to visually impaired individuals navigating the sidewalks of Dhaka city using smartphones without an internet connection. Previously, in collaboration with students, I successfully worked on a project to instantly detect cataracts using a smartphone camera. If these kinds of research outcomes can be made ready for practical use, I believe society will greatly benefit. So far, many of my research projects have been published and presented at several renowned international journals and conferences.
Could you share any unique experience from your research work?
After publishing the research on smartphone-based cataract detection, I was very surprised one day to find an email from a university in distant Ghana, Africa. Several students and faculty members there wanted detailed information so they could conduct similar research in their country. That was when I realized that even a seemingly minor research effort can have an impact that spreads far beyond national borders. As a result, I became even more motivated to conduct research out of a sense of responsibility to society.
What qualities do you believe a scientist should have?
With my limited knowledge, I can’t fully comment on the qualities of scientists. However, pure curiosity and the desire to learn make a scientist or researcher complete. If you combine this with a drive to contribute to society, it creates the perfect environment for tireless research.
What message do you have for young Bangladeshi students who want to pursue science?
You must always have a genuine willingness to learn. Research is undoubtedly a challenging endeavor, requiring immense patience and the ability to withstand criticism. It’s not enough to just focus on increasing the number of publications—the true value of research lies in its benefit to the nation and its people…
