In our interview series with the young generation, this time we interviewed Md. Mahmudur Rahman. Currently, he has been serving professionally as a Scientific Officer at BCSIR Rajshahi Laboratory for over five years and is engaged in research on analytical and environmental chemistry. Read his interview below:
First, we would like to know about you
I am Md. Mahmudur Rahman. I completed my B.Sc & M.Sc from the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Islamic University, Bangladesh. Professionally, I have been working for more than five years as a Scientific Officer at BCSIR Rajshahi Laboratory and conducting research in analytical and environmental chemistry. So far, I have published a total of 30 research articles in internationally recognized peer-reviewed scientific journals (Scopus/SCI/SCIE Indexed) based on my research. I have also reviewed a total of 35 manuscripts sent by renowned publishers such as Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, and Springer as a reviewer (ORCID ID: 0000-0002-1357-0681). In addition, I am serving as an editorial board member for three internationally recognized peer-reviewed scientific journals.
What is the focus of your research?
As a continuation of my professional research work, I am investigating the topic “Environmental pollution control and natural remediation of various inorganic and organic pollutants in the environment using Nanomaterials, Biopolymers, and Nanotechnology (Environmental pollution control and monitoring, Polymer chemistry, Wastewater treatment by bio-polymeric materials, natural products and bioactive compounds, Nano-cellulose, nano-filters etc.)”. I believe this research will play a supportive role in achieving SDG Goals 6 and 9.
How do your research activities benefit us or will benefit us in the future?
The success of my research will contribute to preventing environmental pollution (All the Water, Air, and Soil pollution) caused by the excessive and continuously increasing industrialization and urbanization of our time, and will help to maintain a beautiful and sustainable environment. Developed and emerging countries around the world are much more advanced in this area of research.
Would you like to share any special experiences from your research work?
I was inspired to research this topic mainly because of the rapid destruction of natural resources around us, the misuse of our agro-waste biomass, and the massive amount of environmental pollution caused by unplanned industrialization and urbanization, all of which have adverse impacts that need to be addressed.
Do you have any message for young students in Bangladesh who wish to work in science?
The qualities to develop are honesty, competence, intelligence, optimism, being conscious of time and resources, being free from greed, truthful, and patriotic. Alongside, you should read scientific paper publications and lives of great scientists and Nobel laureates. You must also dream big for yourself.
