Mukt
is an online Bengali magazine featuring news from the open source world. The magazine includes sections on the latest updates related to Linux and open source, reports, software reviews, tutorials, and more. While there are online magazines in various languages about open source on the internet, there was no such online magazine in Bengali. Mukt began its journey with the dream of filling that gap.

Open source means source codes or the programming language of different computer software which are distributed for free. In contrast to expensive commercial software, most open source software can be used completely free of charge. Therefore, to bring the benefits of computer technology to people at all levels in a developing country, there is no alternative to open source. The popularity of open source is steadily increasing. In recent times, interest in open source has also arisen among people from various backgrounds and professions in our country. Thus, it is hoped that the online magazine ‘Mukt’ will be very helpful to Bengali-speaking readers interested in open source.

The Mukt magazine, like open source itself, is open to all. Just as anyone can contribute to open source, anyone can enrich Mukt by publishing any type of writing related to open source and Linux. Moreover, by mentioning the website address and the author’s name, anyone can republish any article from this site on the web or in print media.

From the official blog of the Mukt site, we learn that the site’s work started around 2006. Initially, there was an idea to publish the magazine in PDF format, but later, considering the convenience of both readers and writers, the decision was made to launch it as an online magazine. The name ‘Mukt’ was chosen to reflect the subject matter.

The people working behind this site are Imran Hossain, S.M. Ibrahim (Loblu), Ami Azad, Sumit Ranjan Das, and Ishtiaq Ahmed (Faisal). They have all contributed to various open source projects.

To create the Mukt site, the popular and open content management system Joomla was used. For the site’s Bengali interface, the official Bengali language pack of Bangla Joomla was employed. All design work, including the site’s theme and banner, was done by Imran Hossain. It is largely due to his efforts that the site came to light so quickly. Hosting support for the Mukt site was initially provided by Sumit Ranjan Das. Currently, hosting assistance is provided by phpxperts.net and PHP programmer Hasin Hayder. All technical matters and troubleshooting for the site are managed by Imran Hossain and S.M. Ibrahim (Loblu).

An online magazine in Bengali on open source is truly a remarkable initiative. The entire design of the site is also quite impressive. If you like an article, you can rate it according to your preference. There is also the opportunity to provide constructive criticism after reading an article. However, the site is still at an early stage, so the amount of content is limited. But it is hoped that very soon ‘Mukt’ will fully deliver all news from the open world to readers.
