The great passing of nature lover, biologist, science writer, and revered recipient of the Bangla Academy Award, Dwijen Sharma! A tribute to this free-spirited tree expert. Professor Dwijen Sharma, Friend of Nature, also served as president of Tarupallab. Today, Friday, at 3:50 AM, he breathed his last at Dhaka’s Square Hospital.
I am sharing Jahid’s* write-up about Dwijen da for everyone’s knowledge:
“Dwijen Sharma was a pioneer in nature and evolution studies in Bangladesh. Alongside natural beauty, his works explored the relationship between people and nature and the conflicts of civilization. He was absorbed in the dream of building a beautiful and exploitation-free world.
This lover of nature was born on May 29, 1929. He was a teacher, translator, and writer. He spent his golden childhood at the foot of Patharia Hill in Moulvibazar district, his birthplace. He taught at Barisal BM College and Notre Dame College. For nearly twenty years, he worked as a translator at Progress Publishers in Moscow. Upon returning to Bangladesh, he joined the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. He was honored with the Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Award, and various other national accolades, including the Nature Conservation Award from Nature and Life Foundation–Channel i.
His notable books on nature and environment include: Shyamoli Nisorgo, Phulguli Jeno Kotha, Gachher Kotha Phuler Kotha, Nisorgo Nirman O Nandanik Bhavna, Kurchi Tomar Lagi, Daltion Hooker in the Realm of Himalayan Plants, Trees of Bengal. He also wrote: Living Under Socialism, Life Has No End, Science and Education: From a Sense of Duty, Darwin and The Origin of Species, Darwin in the Circle of Companions, Taxonomy of Angiosperms, Bigle Traveler’s Tales, On the Edge of a Dense Forest, among others.”
