Engaging in scientific research means entering an unknown world, where one must constantly seek paths to new discoveries and innovations. Every step in this journey is filled with challenges, failures, and at times, the sweet taste of success. Rauful Alam’s life is the story of a researcher’s commitment and perseverance. His journey began at a university in Bangladesh and now stretches to top research institutions in the United States.
Chapter One: Laying the Foundation of Academia
Rauful Alam—a dedicated researcher who has made remarkable contributions in organic and medicinal chemistry. After completing his undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Chittagong, he moved on to Stockholm University in Sweden. There, he further strengthened his foundation in research by completing a master’s and PhD in organic chemistry. Then, with a postdoctoral scholarship from the Swedish Chemical Society, he completed his postdoc at the Ivy League school, the University of Pennsylvania, in the United States. This long journey took him into the complex and challenging world of drug discovery, where his professional research career began.
Research: Contributing to the Process of Drug Discovery
The main focus of Rauful Alam’s research is the process of discovering new drugs at the pre-clinical stage. Drug discovery is a complex and time-consuming task. It is divided into two phases:
- Pre-Clinical Research: Where the effectiveness and safety of a drug are tested in the laboratory.
- Clinical Study: Where the drug is administered to healthy volunteers and patients.
Every step of this research is highly specific and guided by strict regulations. His research involves a coordinated team of chemists, biologists, pharmacologists, and physicians.
According to Rauful Alam, “Research is like making small, daily contributions, much like molecules accumulating over time that eventually rain down as knowledge.” To date, about 25 research articles and patents have been published based on his work. These have served as valuable assets for his workplace.
The Success of the First Publication and the Journey Toward Fulfilling Dreams
A major milestone in Rauful Alam’s life was his first research article. In the first year of his PhD, he published his first article as lead author in the prestigious Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS). Publishing in JACS is a mark of recognition in the field of research, which strengthens a researcher’s confidence and professionalism. This accomplishment not only brought him recognition but also elevated his research to the international stage.
A few days after the article was published, Rauful Alam traveled to Philadelphia to attend the American Chemical Society conference. This was his first trip to America. The journey from Stockholm to Philadelphia was an exciting experience for him, full of anticipation and discovery. At the conference, he presented a 20-minute talk and two poster presentations. An interesting event occurred during the poster session.
A student came up to him and said, “I repeated the work following your method.” Hearing this, Rauful was first surprised and then asked with curiosity where the student worked. The student then said he worked at Oxford University and mentioned his supervisor’s name. That supervisor was a renowned researcher whose work Rauful Alam regularly followed.
Through this experience, Rauful realized for the first time that geographic location is no barrier in research. If a researcher’s work is of high quality and innovative, it will certainly attract the attention of others. “It doesn’t matter where you’re working. The quality of your work is what gives it acceptance”—this was a key lesson for him.
Another memorable experience at the conference was meeting a professor from the University of Kansas. After his presentation, the professor approached Rauful and said, “If you ever want to do a postdoc, keep in touch with me.” He also handed Rauful a business card. Rauful was surprised, as he was only a first-year PhD student at the time.
Later, he realized that the professor had targeted him based on the quality of his work. Through this, Rauful understood that professional connections and opportunities are created through quality work.
However, even though he thanked the professor, Rauful’s dreams were even bigger. He applied for postdoc positions at the top five universities in the United States. He received offers from three of them, among which he chose to join the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn).
Rauful says, “My dreams and perspectives grew bigger over time. I was surprised by the postdoc opportunity in Kansas, but due to my self-confidence and aspirations, I stayed true to my goals. As experience grew, I became more aware of my abilities and my dreams for the future became even bigger.”
Through all these experiences, he has learned that success is not just about achievement—it is also a kind of commitment to research. Every failure, every new challenge, and every small victory leads a researcher closer to achieving their greater dreams.

The Importance of Values and Patience in Research
A researcher’s success depends not only on creativity, but also on patience, perseverance, and the habit of learning something new every day. Rauful Alam believes, “There is no direct connection between financial gain and creative work in scientific research. It is a mix of joy and pain.”
He further says, “Failure is important in scientific research. Because from failure, the path to success is built.”
Advice for Young People
Rauful Alam’s message to young researchers in Bangladesh is, “To become a great scientist, you need to spread out across the world for world-class training. Learn from the world and make plans to work in our own country. The culture of research will surely one day be established in Bangladesh, and returning researchers will be the ones to build it.”
A Creative Side Beyond Professional Life
Outside of his life as a researcher, Rauful Alam is also a writer. He has already published three books. He strives to present science—especially chemistry—simply in Bangla, so the younger generation can develop a love for science.
Conclusion
Rauful Alam’s life is not just the story of a researcher; it is a reflection of the inspiration of a science enthusiast. His work and achievements will serve as an example for future young researchers. This story of steadily contributing to scientific progress every day teaches us that with proper guidance and perseverance, nothing is impossible.
