One of the biggest challenges when writing a research paper is accurately assessing whether your work is actually good. Often, we conduct research, but don’t get the chance to judge how well we have presented it or assess the quality of our writing. In most cases, there’s also no opportunity to seek constructive feedback from an experienced colleague before submitting to a journal. An excellent solution to this problem might be a custom GPT tool in ChatGPT – the Research Paper Evaluation Framework. This is essentially a pre-editing assistant that helps easily identify major weaknesses in your research paper from a reviewer’s perspective.
The main aim of this tool is to allow researchers to evaluate their papers from three key angles: Contribution, Execution, and Exposition. Professor Jukka Sihvonen developed this framework, inspired by Professor Alex Edmans’ article “Learnings from 1000 Rejections.”
To use this tool, you have to write a prompt according to a specific structure. For example:
Prompt Template:
“Please evaluate my {theoretical/empirical} research paper intended for submission to a {Top-3/Top-6/Top-20/Top-100} {general-interest/field-specific} {accounting/finance/etc} journal using Edmans’ framework for editorial assessment. Specifically, assess the paper across the three key dimensions: contribution, execution, and exposition. Provide specific, actionable feedback, highlighting both major concerns that could lead to rejection and minor issues that could be improved.”
Example Prompt:
“Please evaluate my empirical research paper intended for submission to a Top-6 general-interest accounting journal using Edmans’ framework for editorial assessment. Specifically, assess the paper across the three key dimensions: contribution, execution, and exposition. Provide specific, actionable feedback, highlighting both major concerns that could lead to rejection and minor issues that could be improved.”
