Dr. Gazi Tawfiq Ezaz, a young Bangladeshi scientist, is working on climate change and water resource management on an international stage. His research is not just theoretical—it serves as a practical tool for reducing disaster risk and ensuring water security.

The geography of Bangladesh has always been a story of water and floods. On one hand, it’s a riverine country; on the other, it’s heavily affected by climate change. That’s why the question of water is as crucial as life and death for us. Considering this reality, among the few young researchers highlighting Bangladesh’s context at the international level, Dr. Gazi Tawfiq Ezaz is a notable figure. His research is not simply a collection of statistics but carries a practical message—if we do not ensure sustainable water management today, it will not be possible to secure a safe future for the next generation.

Early Life and the Spark of Curiosity

Gazi Tawfiq Ezaz was born and raised in an ordinary family in Bangladesh. Even as a child, he observed the monsoon floods, river erosion, and unusual events like sudden droughts. These natural variations sparked countless questions in his mind. Why do crops drown from excess water in some places while in others, the land cracks open from drought? This curiosity is what drew him to science.

During his school and college days, his favorite subjects were geography and science. He realized that the future of the planet depends on how humans use natural resources. That’s why he chose hydrology as his field for higher education, and slowly, it became his life’s goal.

Education and International Journey

His unwavering passion for research took him beyond national borders to the international arena. He completed his PhD in Hydrology and Water Resource Management at the renowned Hohai University in China, earning his degree in 2024. Over four years of research, he learned that water is not merely a natural resource but the foundation of food security, energy development, and environmental stability.

After his PhD, he is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Yellow River Research Institute of North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power in Zhengzhou, China. The main focus of his research is finding ways to effectively manage water resources amid the pressures of climate change and socio-economic challenges.

Key Aspects of His Research

Dr. Ezaz is utilizing advanced technology in his work. Key elements of his research are the Hydrological Model (SWAT) and Agent-based Nexus Approach. These models analyze river flow and balance water distribution across agriculture, industry, and households. He is developing models that demonstrate how population growth, urbanization, or extreme climate events like sudden floods and droughts pose threats to water security.

At the same time, he highlights that water resource management is directly connected to environmental and biodiversity conservation. If a river loses its natural flow, it not only affects agriculture but can destroy the entire ecosystem.

Special Contributions for Bangladesh

One particularly notable study of his focused on Bangladesh. By analyzing extreme rainfall events in Bangladesh from 1987 to 2017, he demonstrated that while coastal regions are experiencing increased heavy rainfall during the monsoon, the inner regions of the country are facing more days of drought. Major drivers behind this are global climate processes such as ENSO, Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM).

This research made him realize that climate studies cannot remain confined to academic journals; rather, they must serve as practical tools for disaster risk reduction, water management, and enhancing societal stability.

Challenges and Turning Points

He has faced various obstacles in his research journey. Often, a lack of sufficient data and occasionally complex statistical analyses made his work difficult. Nevertheless, he never gave up. Each challenge helped him learn something new. He believes that a scientist’s greatest strengths are patience and perseverance.

Global Impact and Recognition

Dr. Ezaz’s work is no longer limited to the academic world alone. His research is making important contributions towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Furthermore, the models he developed provide effective frameworks for policymakers, helping to reduce conflict over water usage.

International research conferences have widely praised his papers and presentations. Citations of his papers on Google Scholar are increasing day by day, demonstrating the global relevance of his work.

Message for the Youth

To the youth, Dr. Ezaz says—

“The journey in science begins with curiosity and critical thinking. Gradually enhance your research skills, learn to analyze data, and practice regularly. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, as mistakes are the best teachers. Focus on solving local problems, but always keep a global perspective in mind. Always remember: Think Twice, Act Wise.”

Conclusion

Dr. Gazi Tawfiq Ezaz is a true inspiration for us. His life proves that science is not confined to books or research papers—it is a powerful tool for solving people’s real-life problems. He has shown that a young Bangladeshi researcher can also become a leader in addressing global climate change and water crises.

His message to the next generation is clear—not to fight with nature, but to coexist with it. This philosophy can become a new guiding light for young scientists in Bangladesh.
