The big question all over the world right now is—how can we gradually transition from metal and plastic-dependent industries to smart, eco-friendly, and sustainable materials? What would the world look like if the airplanes, cars, buildings, and even medical devices we use in the future were made from smart biocomposites? Dr. Md. Rezaur Rahman, Associate Professor at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Malaysia, is searching for concrete scientific answers to these questions. He is a faculty member and researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Energy Sustainability, and has also been involved in international research collaborations for many years as a Visiting Research Fellow at Tokushima University, Japan.

Dr. Rezaur primarily works on smart biocomposite materials, natural fiber-based composites, nanocomposites, and advanced polymer materials. At the core of his research is the development of materials from natural sources—like jute, coconut coir, kenaf, and acacia wood—that are environmentally friendly, yet strong, durable, and suitable for industrial use. In his edited book on Acacia Wood Bio-composites, he demonstrates how high-strength biocomposites can be manufactured from local wood sources for industrial applications, and how this can impact the environment.

Most notably, Dr. Rezaur’s work goes beyond research articles; he is an editor/author of several books such as Smart Biocomposite Materials: Fabrication, Applications and Sustainability and Advanced Nanocarbon Polymer Biocomposites, which comprehensively discuss the use of biocomposites in a wide range of fields—future smart materials, nanocarbon composites, sensors, construction, biomedical devices, drug delivery, automotive, and aerospace, among others.

According to research statistics and his Google Scholar profile, Dr. Rezaur’s publications have received more than 6,600 citations, with an h-index of 38, and he has contributed as author or co-author to over 200 international journal articles, books, and book chapters. He is listed among Stanford University’s Top 2% Scientists—a strong testament to the international impact and recognition of his work.

His journey is particularly inspiring in the Bangladeshi context. He has taught as a Teaching Assistant at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and after joining higher studies and research in Malaysia and Japan, he has led international research teams and managed research projects funded by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education. In addition, he has worked as an External Supervisor and international collaborator with universities in Australia and other countries. In other words, Dr. Rezaur is a living example of how a scientist from Bangladesh’s education system can find a place on the world-class research stage.

His recent work on smart biocomposites includes studies on the rheological (flow) properties of natural fiber-based composites, enhancing the mechanical properties of acacia wood-based biocomposites, dye removal and water treatment using graphene/nanocellulose-enriched nanocomposite membranes, green energy production from waste biomass pellets, the self-healing capability of biocomposites, and the use of biocomposites in automotive, aerospace, construction, and biomedical engineering. This kind of work teaches us that “eco-friendly” means more than just stopping plastics; it’s about using science to create new materials that are strong, long-lasting, functional, and less harmful to the planet.

Special Interview Session by Biggani.org: Direct Conversation on Future Smart Materials and Career Path

This time, Biggani.org is organizing an online interview and open discussion session with Dr. Rezaur, where he will share his research visions, career journey, and practical advice for young students.

The session will primarily focus on—
