Structural Differences Between Male and Female Brains

The structure of the human brain is generally the same, comprising about 40% gray matter and 80% white matter. However, there are still some structural differences between male and female brains, which is why women tend to talk more than men, while men tend to understand maps better and more quickly than women. But why does this happen? Various studies have provided answers to this question.

Intelligence tests reveal that men use seven times more gray matter than women, while women use nine times more white matter than men. A key function of gray matter is handling logical tasks such as spatial perception, map reading, mathematics, and problem-solving. On the other hand, white matter connects the brain’s processing centers and plays a role in language skills, emotional thinking, and multitasking.

Since women use more white matter, they are more adept at verbal communication. In fact, a much larger part of the female brain is used for communication compared to males, making women more skilled at using language as a tool for social bonding. In contrast, men tend to use language primarily for exchanging information and solving problems. On average, a woman uses about 7,000 words a day, while a man uses about 2,000 words.
The communication between the two hemispheres of women’s brains is more efficient than in men’s brains, which is why while men tend to focus on one task at a time, women are able to multitask. It is believed that this highly efficient communication gives rise to many innate characteristics seen in women. These differences have gradually developed since prehistoric times. When men went out hunting and had to use their brains to identify locations and solve problems, women had to develop linguistic skills to ensure the safety and upbringing of their children and households.
There is still much opportunity for research in this field. It is hoped that new information will continue to emerge in the future.
