Why Do We Forget Our Dreams So Quickly?

Waking up in the middle of the night, you may have thought—how strange, how vivid that dream was, yet by the time you sit at the breakfast table, it seems to vanish like smoke. You are not alone. Most of our dreams disappear within a few minutes. But why does this happen?

The main period for dreaming is REM sleep. There is a special stage of our sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep. During this time, the brain is almost as active as when we are awake. But the difference is—the part of the brain that stores long-term memories becomes mostly inactive during this stage. As a result, even though dreams appear vividly before our eyes, they’re not saved as permanent memories.

Scientists say that our dreams usually get stuck in short-term memory, which can only hold information for about 30 seconds. That’s why, if you want to remember a dream, it’s important to wake up at that exact moment. If you move on to the next stage of sleep directly, the dream will disappear, too.

Why do we remember the last dreams of the night more? During sleep, REM cycles happen roughly every 90 minutes. The later it gets, the longer these REM stages become. Early in the night they may last only a few minutes, but toward morning, they can stretch up to 20 minutes. That’s why we tend to remember the final dreams of the night more vividly. On the other hand, those who sleep only 6 hours get less than half the time to dream. So, if you don’t get a full 8 hours of sleep, the chances of remembering your dreams decrease.

Do age, gender, and personality play a role in dreaming? Studies show that women, on average, remember their dreams a bit more than men. Younger people also tend to recall dreams better, but this ability declines with age.

Additionally, people who are introverted, imaginative, and open to new experiences tend to remember their dreams better. According to a 2017 study, those who are creative and highly imaginative usually recall more details from their dreams than others.

Is there a way to remember dreams? Psychologist Leslie Ellis suggests—after waking up, keep your eyes closed and remain still for a few moments while you try to recall fragments of your dream. Then write them down quickly. Because if you don’t, everything will disappear within minutes.

Interestingly, reading or talking more about dreams also increases the tendency to remember them. In other words, if you regularly think about dreams, read books, or take classes on the topic, your ability to recall dreams improves.

Do dreams carry hidden messages? In Western culture, dreams are often considered meaningless. But experts say dreams actually reflect our hidden emotions. The thoughts or worries we suppress during the day tend to surface in our dreams at night. So, sometimes, dreams work as a mirror to our minds.

Let’s look at some interesting facts,

  • On average, a person spends about 6 years of their life dreaming.
  • Many historic discoveries and works of art were inspired by dreams. For example, scientist Friedrich Kekulé first envisioned the chemical structure of benzene after dreaming of a snake biting its own tail.
  • Lucid dreaming—being aware of your dreams—has opened up new worlds of creativity for many people.

In conclusion, dreams are a mysterious chapter in our lives. Even if we can’t remember everything, our thoughts, fears, joys, and subconscious emotions play out in them. And if we pay a little extra attention, those lost dreams could become our companions and might even open new doors to creativity. So tonight, before you go to bed, keep a notebook and pen nearby. Who knows, your dream might hold the hint for tomorrow’s next big discovery.
