Euclid was a renowned Hellenistic mathematician. He is also known as the “Father of Geometry.” His contributions span various branches of mathematics, such as the fundamental rules of arithmetic, geometry, mathematical quantities and symbols, and number theory. When the discovery of irrational numbers placed Greek mathematics in a crisis, arithmetic began to rely more heavily on geometry, and much of Euclid’s mathematics can also be described as geometric algebra. His principal scientific work is “Euclid’s Elements“. This book discusses plane and solid geometry, as well as various number theory problems, including algorithms. “Euclid’s Elements” greatly influenced scientists like Galileo Galilei, Nicolaus Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, and especially Isaac Newton. All of them put the knowledge gained from this book to use in various ways.
“Euclid’s Elements” remained in use as a textbook in various forms for nearly 2,000 years. The book primarily deals with various postulates of geometry. The main reason for its popularity is that each theory is presented with clear logic or reasoning, in other words, the strength of Euclid’s mathematical reasoning skills. In some parts of the book, Euclid attempted to express geometry through number theory. It is thought that he did this because he was not able to make significant advancements in arithmetic.
According to Proclus, Euclid must have been born during the time of Ptolemy; the reason he gives relates to the Greek mathematician Archimedes. He stated that Euclid presented his theories on mathematics even before Archimedes.
Proclus also told this to Ptolemy when Ptolemy asked Proclus whether there was any easier method or way to learn geometry apart from Euclid’s Elements.
Very little is known about Euclid’s birth or death; it is only known that he lived in Alexandria, Egypt. Among his written works are three books: Euclid’s Elements, Euclidean Geometry, and the Euclidean Algorithm. After the invention of the printing press, Euclid’s Elements was one of the first books to be printed, and it has been printed more than a thousand times.
