Tasmiyah Tahsin Mayeesha is working as a Virtual Private Assistant on the ICT EBLICT Virtual Private Assistant Project. Previously, she was involved with North South University’s DIAL Lab and projects such as the Fatima Fellowship and Google Summer of Code. Through developing Bengali Q&A systems, visual question generation, and administrative chatbot development, she is contributing to Bangladesh’s technological advancement. Let’s learn more about her.
First, could you tell us about yourself?
I am working as a Virtual Private Assistant on the ICT EBLICT Virtual Private Assistant Project, which is operated under Dream71 company. Previously, I was a full-time researcher at North South University’s Design, Access and Inclusion Lab (DIAL). I have also worked at various institutions, including the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society.
What is your research focus?
I have conducted research on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) at North South University, Fatima Fellowship, and the ICT EBLICT Virtual Private Assistant Project. My research topics include studies on AI policy and ethics, assessment of cultural bias in Bengali and other languages, building Bengali question answering and question generation systems, and currently, developing a chatbot for the Government of Bangladesh. My work in HCI includes research on the challenges faced by women in computing.
How are your research activities benefiting us, or how will they benefit us?
The development of the first administrative chatbot for the Government of Bangladesh will directly benefit citizens. My earlier research on AI policy and ethics, which was accepted at the ICTD 24 Conference (International Conference on Information & Communication Technologies and Development), is the first comprehensive work on AI policy in Bangladesh. My undergraduate thesis project, Bangla Question Answering System (Bangla QA), was the first research benchmark for Bangla Q&A using deep learning. Similarly, the creation of the first visual question generation system in Bangla is a significant contribution to Bangla Natural Language Processing.
