After school, Tamanna was heading home. Glancing at her face in the mirror, she suddenly asked, “Mom, do I look old?” Her mother laughed and replied, “You’re only 16 — how could you possibly look old?” But did you know, science today has advanced so much that one day even a joke like Tamanna’s could be tested — just by looking at a photo of her face?
This amazing tool is called FaceAge — an artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool developed by researchers at Mass General Brigham in Boston. This tool determines a person’s biological age. That means even if you are 16 on paper, if your body is aging at the rate of a 20-year-old, this tool can detect it.
Biological Age vs. Chronological Age: What’s the Difference?
We usually count age by date of birth—this is known as Chronological Age. But the age formed based on how our cells are deteriorating inside, how our organs are functioning, is called Biological Age. And this age is what truly reflects our physical health.
FaceAge doesn’t just look for gray hair or wrinkles around the eyes when assessing photos — it observes subtle changes like skin texture, muscle tone, and bone structure. These are hidden signals from the body’s internal aging process.
Why is This So Important?
Research has shown that people whose faces look older than their actual age have a much higher health risk. They tend to have weaker immunity, reduced organ function, and take longer to recover from chronic illness.
So if doctors can determine someone’s biological age, it can help a lot in treatment planning. For someone biologically younger, more active treatment may be given. For someone aging faster inside, it might be better not to prescribe extra medication or risky procedures.
But Some Caution Is Needed
FaceAge is still experimental. Factors like lighting, facial expressions, and makeup can affect results. There are also ethical concerns about privacy and misuse of data.
Still, it’s undoubtedly a glimpse into the future of medical science — where maybe just a single photo could reveal how healthy or frail you are on the inside.
Today, Tamanna was jokingly checking herself in the mirror, saying, “Do I look old?” But perhaps in the future, doctors will say — “Let’s take a photo — just by looking, we’ll tell how your body is doing!”
Scientific terms explained:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI): A technology where computers learn to think like humans.
- Biological Age: The age of the cells and organs inside the body.
- Chronological Age: Your age according to the calendar.
Do you think, in the future, people will be able to check their health just by showing a photo? What could be the advantages or disadvantages? Think about it!
