After completing his Honors in Chemistry and Master’s in Organic Chemistry at the University of Chittagong, Dr. Muhammad Nazrul Islam pursued higher studies at Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul under a scholarship from the Turkish government. During his doctorate, he was engaged in advanced studies at Boğaziçi University in Turkey and polymer chemistry research at the University of Helsinki in Finland. He later worked as a scientist at SÖZAL KİMYA. He is currently affiliated with the University of Arkansas in the United States.
He gave an interview to biggani.org on March 26, 2023, with the conversation conducted by the editor Dr. Mashiur Rahman. The highlights of the interview are as follows:
- To express interest in a PhD topic or lab, you need to write a Motivational Letter, detailing why you are interested. The most important part is to link your own research with the lab’s work, which can often be challenging.
- He is currently working on developing environmentally friendly polymers that will biodegrade after use, potentially serving as an alternative to the plastics that are threatening the environment.
- He offered some advice for young scientists from his own experience:
- (1) It is important to start research work while still a student. This helps develop skills from an early stage.
- (2) Since English is the main language for researchers, having proficiency in English is essential. Exams like GRE or IELTS should be taken ahead of time.
- (3) Those interested in higher studies abroad should begin preparing as university students.
- (4) While still in Honors, students should acquire the necessary research skillset (research techniques, data analysis, use of scientific instruments, etc.).

On behalf of biggani.org, we express our gratitude to Dr. Nazrul Islam and wish him continued success.
Dr. Muhammad Nazrul Islam, currently affiliated with the University of Arkansas, has an impressive academic journey and a passion for scientific discovery. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from Chittagong University, he was awarded a scholarship by the Turkish government to further his studies at Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul.
During his doctoral studies, he actively participated in research concerning higher education at Boğaziçi University in Turkey and polymer chemistry at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Following his studies, he made significant contributions to the field while working as a scientist at SÖZAL KİMYA.
On March 26, 2023, Dr. Islam graciously shared his insights and experiences in an interview with our editor, Dr. Mashiur Rahman, at biggani.org . The central themes of the interview included:
The importance of a well-articulated motivational letter when expressing interest in a PhD lab. This letter should elaborate on why you are specifically interested in that lab’s work and how it aligns with your own research. A crucial aspect of this process is relating your work to the lab’s research, which can sometimes be a challenging task.
Dr. Islam is currently engaged in the development of eco-friendly polymers which, after use, are biodegradable and could potentially replace harmful plastics, thereby reducing their environmental impact.
In the interview, Dr. Islam offers invaluable advice to aspiring scientists, which includes starting research work at the student level to build skills early, improving English proficiency since it is the primary language of researchers, and considering international higher education opportunities early on during one’s academic journey. He also emphasized acquiring the necessary research skillset during undergraduate studies, including research techniques, data analysis, and usage of scientific instruments.
