Dreams of Success Beneath Bangladesh’s Waters: BRAC Duburi and the Road Ahead

News Desk, Prothom Alo

There was a time when the word ‘robotics’ was a distant concept even to the average reader in Bangladesh. And autonomous vehicles that could work underwater seemed straight out of science fiction! But now, the reality is that a group of young Bangladeshi researchers and engineers has directly secured a place in the semifinals of the world’s most prestigious competition, RoboSub 2025.

This achievement is called BRAC Duburi.

The story began with a dream

A group of students at BRAC University, united by their passion for technology and desire to do something new, formed the country’s first Autonomous Underwater Robotics Research Team — “Duburi.” This team is not just a project; it represents a movement, where relentless effort is dedicated to applying technology to real-world problems in Bangladesh.

In 2023, they secured second place globally. And now, in the 2025 competition, they have reached the semifinals directly—capable of competing shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best research teams and universities.

Why is this achievement important?

The RoboSub competition is not just a robotics exhibition; it is a global stage for technological research, where not underground but under the sea, autonomous vehicles demonstrate their capabilities. The machines must pass challenging tests involving complex missions, obstacles, signal analysis, and fully autonomous decision-making.

BRAC Duburi proved their capabilities to international judges from the very first round of this demanding test.

Blending technology with patriotism

Team leader Abid Mahmud summed it up in one sentence: “This is not just another success for our team; this is Bangladesh’s moment.” Behind this lies a powerful vision—to represent the country on the world stage and to develop practical solutions for Bangladesh through technology.

This very goal drives Dubotech Digital Ltd, Bangladesh’s first company working on underwater technology, which is collaborating with the Duburi team on research and development. Dubotech CEO Naeem Hossain Saikat said, “Our aim is to bring Bangladesh to the forefront of underwater innovation.”

This collaboration is not just about a project; it marks the beginning of an ecosystem, where technology, education, and entrepreneurs come together to shape the future of Bangladesh.

The prospects of our riverine nation

Bangladesh is a land of rivers. We have vast water resources, yet research and innovation in underwater technology are extremely limited. However, the sector holds immense potential—in maritime security, environmental monitoring, maintaining river and sea infrastructure, and even opening new horizons for the blue economy.

BRAC Duburi is a beacon of hope amidst this gap.

A call to the youth

For today’s youth, this success is not just a story of joy or excitement; it’s a call—to channel one’s passion, dreams, and talents for the service of the nation. All it needs is the right guidance and perseverance.

The members of the Duburi team did not start out with access to foreign labs or international funding. They began in a university classroom—with designs drawn on paper, failed prototypes, nights spent coding, and the struggle to continue despite a limited budget. But they never gave up.

To the youth: “Technology is not the exclusive game of developed nations. Now is the time for Bangladesh to claim its place on the map of innovation.”

An appeal to policymakers

Discussions about startups are happening in Bangladesh today, but there is still limited infrastructure for prioritizing research and innovation. The success of BRACU Duburi and Dubotech shows that if Bangladesh’s talented youth are given the necessary support, training, and funding, they are capable of leading in any global competition.

Both the public and private sectors should work together to form a long-term “Technology Incubation Program,” where universities, industries, and investors collaborate hand in hand.

Final words

BRAC Duburi has built more than just a robot. They have shown how dreams, struggle, and vision together can move a nation forward.

Dear students, this path is open to you as well. Ask questions, create, fail, rise again—and one day, standing on the soil of Bengal, conquer the world.

Countless Duburis are waiting—not to cross the seas, but to plant Bangladesh’s flag deep beneath its waves.
