“He was a radiant flame of science—one that, even after being extinguished, has ignited countless enlightened minds.”

A luminous name in the world of Bangladeshi science—Dr. M Shamsher Ali. The mere mention of his name brings to mind an unselfish, wise, and rational scientist who dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge, the promotion of science, and the spread of ethical education.

When news of his passing spread in Dhaka around 2 a.m. on August 2, 2025, a shadow of mourning fell over Bangladesh’s scientific and educational circles. The way people—young and old, teachers and researchers, general readers—are expressing their respects on social media shows that he was not just a scientist, but an inspiration.

📖 A Teacher, A Thinker

Many know him through his popular books—especially “Scientific Indications in the Holy Qur’an” and “Aladdin’s Real Lamp”. As one reader told us,

“I keep buying this book and giving it as a gift to my loved ones—it bridges science and spirituality in a wonderful way.”

The author whose works have touched so many hearts has a life story that is equally inspiring.

👨‍🔬 From Small Town to International Research Labs

Dr. M Shamsher Ali was born in Bheramara, Kushtia (1937–1940), but his ancestral home was in Singia, Jessore. After finishing his matriculation at Jessore Zilla School and intermediate at Rajshahi College, he enrolled in the Department of Physics at the University of Dhaka, where he completed both his honors and master’s degrees (1959 and 1960).

Later, he earned a PhD in Theoretical Nuclear Physics from the University of Manchester, UK (1965). His research focused on the structure of the nucleus, three-body interactions, and non-local nuclear models.

🇧🇩 Returning to Bangladesh, Working for the Nation

After obtaining his PhD abroad, he began working at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. From 1970 to 1978, he served as the commission’s director. Following Bangladesh’s independence, he took on leadership roles in the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and at the university level in advancing science.

From 1982, he began teaching at the Department of Physics at the University of Dhaka. He then played a groundbreaking role as the founding Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (1992–96). Later, he also served as Vice-Chancellor of Southeast University (2002–2010).

🧪 Science Advocacy Alongside Research

Dr. Shamsher Ali did not confine himself only to research. He wanted science to transcend the walls of the laboratory—to reach into people’s thoughts, practices, and culture.

He participated in many science-based discussions on television—especially on the integration of the Qur’an and science, the importance of ethical education, and the role of science in building a rational society. His programs on BTV sparked a curiosity for science among many students and general viewers.

🏅 Honors and Leadership

Dr. Ali served as President of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (2004–2012). He was a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, the Islamic World Academy of Sciences, and TWAS.

The list of honors he received is equally long:

  • Hari Prasanna Roy Gold Medal (University of Dhaka)
  • Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal
  • TWNSO Award
  • Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Gold Medal
  • Global Innovation Foundation Fellowship

🌟 A Scientist Who Also Spoke of Faith

In our society, science and religion are often seen as opposing poles. But Dr. Shamsher Ali was that rare figure who showed that science and religion can complement each other.

He repeatedly said:

“Science teaches me reasoning, religion teaches me morality. Only together can they build an enlightened society.”

💬 A Message for the Youth

He always encouraged young people to pursue science. He believed that Bangladesh will only prosper when the youth focus on research and build a technology-driven nation.

Many who are mourning his death today are his former students or followers—for some, even a single word from him changed their life.

🕯️ What Have We Lost?

We have lost a teacher, a guide, a warrior of knowledge. He was the person who spread light through his books, awakened consciences through his speeches, and raised Bangladesh’s profile on the world stage through his research.

As he used to say:

“To spread light, one should not fear lighting their own candle.”

We—his students, followers, readers—are still inspired by that flame. The books he left behind, his lectures, and his educational vision continue to guide us today.

🌹 A Final Tribute

Dr. M Shamsher Ali was a great person of our times. It is in his memory that we are publishing this article—with respect, with love, and with a sense of responsibility.

Sir, you were like a beacon of light—for even though it is extinguished, the glow remains in our hearts.

With deepest respect and love, from everyone at Biggani Org.
