Karim Ullah is currently a researcher affiliated with the University of Chicago in the United States and the founder of a biotech startup called NextAge Therapeutics. His main research area is drug discovery, which combines biology, chemistry, and computer technology to design new potential drug molecules.
He focuses primarily on computational drug design, molecular biology, and biochemistry to develop small molecules that can target specific proteins or enzymes in the human body. An important aspect of his current research is developing new inhibitors targeting an enzyme called PHD1, which could open new possibilities for treating cancer and age-related diseases in the future.
Even while living in the United States, he is working on research aimed at discovering a new generation of effective, targeted medicines using modern technology.
💬 Q&A Session:
Question: First, we’d like to know a bit about you.
Answer:
I am Karim Ullah. I am currently engaged in research at the University of Chicago in the United States, and I have also founded a biotech startup called NextAge Therapeutics.
The main goal of my research is to discover new kinds of medicines, especially drugs that can open up new possibilities for treating complex diseases like cancer.
Since childhood, I have been deeply interested in science. The idea of improving human health through biology and chemistry has always fascinated me. Currently, I am working on designing potential drug molecules using computational drug design, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
Question: What is your research topic?
Answer:
My main research topic is new drug discovery.
Specifically, we are trying to develop small molecules that can target specific proteins or enzymes in the human body.
Currently, a key goal of my research is developing new inhibitors targeting an enzyme called PHD1, which may play an important role in the treatment of cancer and age-related diseases in the future.
Question: How might your research benefit us?
Answer:
Inside every cell of the human body, thousands of proteins and enzymes work, controlling various cellular processes. Sometimes these proteins can become abnormal, leading to diseases such as cancer.
Scientists aim to develop molecules that can control these abnormal activities.
In our research, we first design potential drug molecules using computers. Then, we analyze how these molecules might bind to a specific protein. Through this process, it gradually becomes possible to develop molecules that could eventually become effective medicines.
Simply put, we are combining computer technology and biology to try and create the medicines of the future.
Question: Would you share any special experiences from your research?
Answer:
If this type of research succeeds, it could open new avenues for treating many serious diseases, including cancer.
In particular, it may be possible to develop drugs that—
- Work on specific targets
- Have fewer side effects
- And directly address the root causes of diseases
Additionally, new drug design technologies could help discover new medicines faster and more effectively in the future.
Question: What qualities do you think a scientist should have?
Answer:
A key aspect of research is patience. Often, the molecule we design does not deliver the expected results in experiments. But even those failures offer new information, which helps further improve future research.
Scientific progress often happens slowly, and every small discovery lays the foundation for bigger successes in the future.
Question: Do you have any advice for young students in Bangladesh?
Answer:
There are many talented students in Bangladesh who could become world-class scientists in the future.
Here is some advice for them—
- Build strong foundations in mathematics, chemistry, and biology
- Maintain your curiosity
- Look for opportunities in research
- Don’t be afraid of failure
Science is a long journey, but with patience, it is possible to make significant contributions to humanity.
