“My Professor Told Me to Quit—But I Didn’t” — Dr. Ashraf Uddin Ahmed

The most difficult moments in research come when, after a long period of effort, the desired results just don’t materialize. Let alone outsiders—even close teachers, supervisors, or colleagues sometimes suggest changing the direction of your research, citing practical concerns. The essence of a pivotal moment in Dr. Ashraf Uddin Ahmed’s research career can be summed up in a single sentence—“My professor told me to quit—but I didn’t.” Within this statement lies the story of a young researcher’s mental fortitude, self-confidence, and sense of responsibility.

At the PhD level, he was working with an enzyme that was extremely unstable by nature. An enzyme, in simple terms, is a protein catalyst responsible for accelerating chemical reactions inside living organisms. Generally, when working with enzymes in a laboratory, it is crucial to keep them active for extended periods. But in Dr. Ashraf Uddin’s case, the enzyme would lose activity within a short time. As a result, every experiment ended in failure, again and again. Not just for months, but for over a year, he had to face the same problem.

In this situation, his supervising professor offered a practical suggestion—to change the topic of his research. This is not unusual in the world of research. PhD students often work under time pressure, face funding constraints, and have a fixed timeframe to complete their research. In many cases, switching from a risky or difficult topic to a relatively easier and more tested one makes it simpler to finish the degree. The professor’s advice was therefore not without merit.

Yet Dr. Ashraf Uddin did not choose the easy way out. He realized that the real value of research lies in solving unknown problems. Taking the easy route might earn him a PhD, but it wouldn’t generate new knowledge. For him, this research wasn’t just about personal academic achievement; it was an opportunity to test his own capabilities. Moreover, as a Bangladeshi student working abroad in a research lab, he felt an added sense of responsibility—if he gave up and left the work unfinished, it wouldn’t only be his own failure, but could be seen, indirectly, as a failure to represent his country properly.

Driven by this mindset, he carried on. He changed his experimental methods, rethought environmental conditions—such as temperature, solution pH, and storage techniques—everything was reconsidered. Repeated failures did not discourage him; instead, each failure provided new information for the next step. Gradually, he discovered a method that allowed the enzyme to remain stable. This success opened a new door in his research, and subsequently, he was able to make important discoveries about the mechanism of that enzyme.

Dr. Ashraf Uddin Ahmed’s experience carries a profound message for young researchers. The path of research does not guarantee quick success. Rather, its true beauty lies in the courage to move forward gradually amidst long periods of uncertainty. The advice of teachers or experienced researchers is, of course, important, but losing faith in your own research can be even more damaging. Recognizing where to be flexible and where to stand firm—that very balance defines a mature researcher.

Dr. Ashraf Uddin’s story reminds us that, in science, the most significant discoveries often arise from moments when everyone else assumes something is impossible. It is the courage to break through the wall of ‘impossible’ that pushes research toward new knowledge.
