Dr. Ghulam Muhammad is a Bangladeshi computer engineer and researcher, currently serving as a professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at King Saud University. He has been affiliated with this university since 2007 and has been a full professor since 2017. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Later, he completed his PhD in Knowledge-based Information Engineering from Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan (2001–2006).

In 2023, he was named a Highly Cited Researcher on Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science list. He received the Research Excellence (Lifetime Achievement) award in the “Economies of the Future” category from the Research, Development and Innovation Authority (RDIA). His main research areas are artificial intelligence, machine learning, signal processing, smart healthcare, and smart agricultural technology. He holds three U.S. patents and has supervised over 20 graduate research projects. He is currently based in Saudi Arabia.

Question: First, we’d like to know about you.
Answer: I am a professor of Computer Engineering. I have been at King Saud University since 2007. I graduated (Batch ’90) from BUET’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering. I obtained my Master’s and PhD degrees from Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan.

Question: What are your research interests?
Answer: My research interests are artificial intelligence, various applications of signal processing, smart healthcare, and smart agriculture. Since 2017, I have been working on rehabilitation for stroke patients, where we analyze brain signals (EEG) to assist patients’ mobility using artificial limbs or exoskeletons. I have also worked on medical image analysis and segmentation.

In agriculture, we have developed robots capable of autonomous movement, which can detect plant diseases and weeds. Additionally, we have developed robots to automatically harvest date fruits. Recently, I have also started working on quantum computing.

Question: How do your research activities benefit society?
Answer: Our proposed solution for stroke patient rehabilitation can reduce the need for frequent hospital visits, saving both time and expenses. In agriculture, our robotics technology reduces labor and increases production. Additionally, systems for detecting driver fatigue and road cracks can help reduce road accidents.

Question: Would you share any special experience from your research life?
Answer: My father was an educator, which inspired me to become one as well. While studying in Japan, I saw professors and students working tirelessly to make meaningful contributions to society. In Saudi Arabia, I found a strong research foundation, which helped me advance my work further and on a broader scale.

Question: What qualities do you think are essential for a scientist?
Answer: Perseverance is extremely important for success in research. One must identify promising research fields for the future and work patiently and with dedication over the long term.

Question: What is your message for the young students of Bangladesh?
Answer: Results do not come overnight. One must work hard, stay aware of recent advancements, and carefully select promising research topics.
