At Biggani.org, we interview scientists scattered across the country and abroad. Since 2006, we’ve been discovering these behind-the-scenes scientists and presenting their work to you. We not only highlight expatriate scientists, but also those who have returned to Bangladesh with skills acquired overseas. Recently, we spoke with Dr. Nabeel Mohammed, who is currently serving as an Associate Professor at North South University. After completing his PhD in Computer Science, he returned to Bangladesh and is playing an important role in research and education.
First, we asked why he wanted to become a scientist. Dr. Nabeel explained that when he was a child, his father bought him a computer, which sparked his interest in computers. In addition, his teacher, Monirul Islam Sharif, had a significant influence on his path to becoming a scientist. Essentially, they were the main inspirations driving him towards science.
Later, he went to Australia for higher education. There, a scientist named Dr. David Squire taught him about information technology, particularly artificial intelligence and computer vision. Computer vision is a technology that enables computers to be trained to recognize images, which can be applied in various fields.
For family reasons, he wished to return to Bangladesh, as he had been away from his family for a long time. Upon returning, he joined North South University and established a computer lab there. Under his leadership, this lab is conducting research on artificial intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP). NLP is a process that enables computers to understand and process human language. Through his work, he is optimizing and improving various artificial intelligence models to make them even more effective.
He has been making notable contributions to the advancement of artificial intelligence in the Bengali language. However, he acknowledges that foreign scientists have contributed more in this field compared to Bangladeshis. According to him, the development of artificial intelligence in Bengali can further improve citizen services. He also points out its limitations, such as the scarcity of technological resources for Bengali. Despite Bengali speakers being one of the largest language communities in the world, our technological resources are limited, which causes us to lag in many areas. However, student interest in this field in Bangladesh is currently rising.
His advice to young researchers is that having a good supervisor is invaluable for quality research. When a supervisor is able to provide guidance at every step, the overall quality of research increases.
Those who are working with software or want to become developers should also engage in research. Through research, they can discover effective solutions to technological problems.
For a researcher, perseverance is extremely important and it should be cultivated right from the beginning. This ability to persist is developed when diving deeply into a specific topic, which later helps to establish oneself as a skilled software engineer.
Although various resources are readily available online, the key to learning is to develop your own interest and mindset. This motivation and positive outlook cannot be created by someone else; researchers must foster these qualities within themselves and be thoughtful.
