Dr. Tarannum Afrin has recently completed her Ph.D. research at Deakin University, Waurn Ponds campus, Australia, under the prestigious Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) scholarship. Her research focused on developing eco-friendly methods of extracting bamboo fiber and its versatile use in the textile industry.

Previously, she completed her M.Sc. at the Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, as a Commonwealth Scholar (2005–2006), and secured first place in her B.Sc. degree (1999–2003) from the College of Textile Technology, Bangladesh.

Dr. Afrin continues to conduct research in textile engineering, natural fiber technology, and sustainable production systems. Her work has already received international attention and has been featured in several Australian scientific journals, as well as television and radio interviews. Her research is making a significant contribution to the future development of Bangladesh’s textile sector.

💬 Q&A Session:

Question: How is your research life in Australia?
Answer: My time in Australia is extremely busy with research. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus. My research topic is developing eco-friendly methods to produce bamboo fiber and its application in the textile industry.

Question: Could you share some memories from your childhood?
Answer: I was born in Bangladesh, the most beautiful country in the world. I am the first child of my parents. Most of my childhood was spent at my maternal grandparents’ house—in Barishal. I grew up surrounded by the affection and love of my grandparents. My grandfather was a naval officer; it was from him that I received my first lessons in physics and mathematics.

Question: What inspired you to choose textile engineering as a profession?
Answer: I had an interest in design since childhood. When I was applying to universities, one day I read a report on textiles in ‘Prothom Alo’, which inspired me. My father said, “One day, you’ll create your own brand—‘TA’.” That statement became a guiding light in my life.

Question: What are the main challenges in Bangladesh’s textile industry?
Answer: Our biggest challenge is design. We often work according to buyer instructions and do not showcase our own creativity. In European and Australian markets, our products are mostly generic, though we could display our talents with fashionable products. Additionally, we have shortcomings in research and development (R&D).

Question: How can these challenges be overcome?
Answer: We need to change our backward-looking mentality and take on new challenges. We must remember—there is no substitute for hard work.

Question: What is your favorite professional field?
Answer: Research. Because there is joy in discovering something new. I also love debating—it has strengthened my logical and analytical skills.

Question: What is the main objective of your research?
Answer: The goal of my research is to develop an eco-friendly process for extracting bamboo fiber. Currently, harmful chemicals are used in making bamboo fiber, which is detrimental to the environment and destroys the natural qualities of bamboo. My developed process is environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Fibers produced this way retain features like UV resistance, antibacterial, and quick moisture absorption.

Question: What are your future plans?
Answer: I want to see a green and sustainable world. Every step of my work is motivated by this goal. I believe environmental awareness and commitment to research can be the greatest assets for future generations.

💬 Interview Section

Q: How is life in Australia as a researcher?
A: Life here is very busy with research work. I’m pursuing my Ph.D. at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus. My research focuses on developing an eco-friendly process for producing bamboo fiber and exploring its applications in the textile industry.

Q: Tell us a bit about your childhood.
A: I was born in Bangladesh, one of the most beautiful countries on earth. I’m the eldest child of my parents. I spent much of my early life at my maternal grandparents’ home in Barishal. My grandfather, a naval officer, introduced me to the wonders of physics and mathematics, and my grandmother surrounded me with love and care.

Q: What inspired you to choose textile engineering as a career?
A: I’ve always been passionate about design. During university admission time, I read a newspaper article about textile engineering in Prothom Alo. My father encouraged me, saying, “One day you’ll have your own brand—like CK, but TA.” That idea stayed with me and shaped my career path.

Q: What are the major challenges facing Bangladesh’s textile industry today?
A: One of the biggest challenges is design. We often only produce what buyers order instead of showcasing our creativity. In European and Australian markets, our products are mostly basic. I believe we have the potential to create fashionable, high-value products. Also, our R&D (research and development) infrastructure is still underdeveloped, and we often rely too much on buying houses instead of direct communication with fashion retailers.

Q: How can these challenges be turned into opportunities?
A: We must move away from a backward-looking mindset and be willing to take on new challenges. Hard work is the only alternative to success—there are no shortcuts.

Q: Among your many talents—teaching, music, debate, and research—what do you love the most?
A: Research is my favorite. It’s where I find the joy of discovery. Debate also shaped me deeply—it helped me develop logical and analytical thinking, which proved useful in communicating my research to the media.

Q: Could you share more details about your bamboo research?
A: I’ve developed an eco-friendly process to extract fiber from bamboo. Current commercial bamboo fiber production uses harmful chemicals, destroying bamboo’s natural properties. My method is sustainable, inexpensive, and retains bamboo’s natural features such as UV protection, antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties. Bamboo grows rapidly without pesticides or irrigation—making it a perfect green alternative to cotton.

Q: What are your future goals?
A: I dream of a green and sustainable planet. Every step of my work is guided by that vision. My message to everyone is simple—let’s be environmentally conscious and nurture the light within us through continuous learning and awareness.
