On one hand, their personal future—will they finish their PhD, will their research succeed? On the other, an invisible sense of responsibility to represent their country—“If I can’t succeed, will people start questioning the capability of students from my country?” This psychological pressure was very real in Dr. Ashraful Uddin’s research career. During his PhD, he had to work on an enzyme that degraded very quickly. At one point, even his professor advised him to give up. But in that moment, he did not back down.
