Recently, we interviewed Dr. Mohammad Azizur Rahman on the renaissance of energy solutions. Driven by an unwavering interest in the development of energy and power in the oil and gas sector, his journey has taken him from BUET to Dalhousie, the University of Alberta, and Texas A&M Qatar. He is currently engaged in research as an Associate Professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, where he is working on sustainable solutions for energy and power. Read his interview to learn more:

First, can you tell us about yourself?

I completed my bachelor’s degree at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2000. After that, I worked as a faculty member at BUET until 2022. I earned my master’s degree from Dalhousie University in Canada in 2004. Then, in 2010, I completed my PhD at the University of Alberta, where my research focused on multiphase flow for oil and gas. After my PhD, from 2010 to 2014, I carried out postdoctoral research on multiphase flow. I worked as an Assistant Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and after that, joined Texas A&M Qatar in 2016. After working there until June 2024, I am now an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Hamad Bin Khalifa University. My main research area is energy and power, particularly as applied to oil and gas.

What is the topic of your research?

“My research is primarily centered on multiphase flow in the oil and gas sector. This includes tackling flow assurance challenges in the transportation pipelines for oil and gas, which could be in either subsurface or surface settings. I observe flow behavior using advanced experimental techniques and diagnostic tools. In addition, my research involves working on carbon reduction strategies, hydrogen transportation, and renewable energy solutions.

How do your research activities benefit us or will benefit us in the future?

Multiphase flow is extremely important not only in the oil and gas industry but in various energy applications. It is also used in fields like the food industry, water purification, and oil and gas operations. By understanding the basics of multiphase flow, we can develop new technologies that help improve flow efficiency. Understanding flow behavior helps us advance new technologies, such as multiphase flow metering, which is vital for accurately measuring flow transport.

Do you have any unique research experiences that you would like to share with us?

Through my research, I have contributed to developing several technologies that have benefited the industry. I have worked closely with various universities and ministries in Bangladesh, including BUET and MIST. I have also organized knowledge-sharing workshops and conferences. These joint efforts not only help educate people but also support recruiting graduate students from Bangladesh and around the world. As a result, I have been able to contribute to the preparation of the next generation of engineers.

What qualities do you think a scientist should possess?

A scientist should have diligence, perseverance, ethics, and a sense of responsibility. An inquisitive mindset is necessary for discovering new technologies. At the same time, one should have the ability to understand complex topics, help others, and contribute to developing new engineers—which ultimately supports the well-being of humanity.

Do you have any messages or advice for young students in Bangladesh who want to build a career in science?

“Future students should focus on improving their communication skills, building a strong CV, and becoming familiar with new technologies and research.”
