For new researchers in resource-limited countries like Bangladesh, starting research can be a significant challenge. However, with motivation, patience, and proper guidance, it is entirely possible. Especially for those who are struggling due to a lack of funding, laboratory facilities, or supervision, here are some effective strategies and tips:

What to Do at the Beginning of Your Research
The first and most important step in research is identifying your area of interest. Clearly determine the topic you want to work on. For example, if your interest is in biology, data science, bioinformatics, climate change, agriculture, or engineering, start by reading recent research papers to build foundational knowledge. Platforms like Google Scholar, PubMed, and ResearchGate allow you to download free and open-access research articles. Another critical tip for beginners is to start with small topics. It’s good to think big in research, but it’s important to set realistic goals at first. Begin with small projects to learn research techniques and methodologies, then gradually get involved in larger projects.
What to Do If You Lack Funding and Laboratory Access
In countries like Bangladesh, acquiring sufficient research funding can be challenging, but that doesn’t mean starting research is impossible. At the beginning, you do not need large financial support. Especially for data-based or in silico research, all you need is a computer and an internet connection. In particular, for those interested in biology or genetics, public database analysis can be a great alternative. For example, you can collect and analyze genomic or proteomic data from databases like NCBI, GEO, TCGA, Ensembl, and KEGG to generate new and high-quality research. Additionally, in fields such as social sciences, economics, or public health, the necessary data are available in public databases like those of the World Bank, UNICEF, or WHO. You can analyze these datasets using free software such as R or Python. There are also plenty of free courses on platforms like YouTube and Coursera to help you learn how to use this software. For mathematical modeling or simulation-based research, you do not need access to any laboratory. You can conduct work such as climate modeling, economic analysis, or digital signal processing using only software.
What to Do When You Lack a Supervisor
If you don’t have a supervisor, there’s no need to be discouraged. Read international research related to your interests, then contact researchers by email. When reaching out, be concise, polite, and clear. You can use LinkedIn and ResearchGate to connect with international researchers, as many are eager to help newcomers. If one person doesn’t respond, don’t get discouraged—reach out to someone else. Never hesitate to ask for help. If you have a strong idea and are passionate about implementing it, someone will surely be willing to help.
Publishing Your Research Findings
If you lack funds to publish your research findings, there’s no cause for concern. Many journals waive publication fees for researchers from developing countries. Among these, Research4Life is a noteworthy global initiative that provides free or affordable access to scientific, technical, medical, and social science research papers and information for researchers, teachers, and policymakers in developing nations. However, be sure to seek advice from experienced individuals to ensure the quality of your manuscript before publication.
Effective Ways to Learn Research Without Spending Money
In today’s technology-driven world, countless free resources are available to help you get started in research. Platforms like Coursera, edX, FutureLearn, and MIT OpenCourseWare offer free courses on research methodology. These platforms provide opportunities to learn fundamental concepts, data analysis, and various research techniques. There are also excellent opportunities to develop new skills through free seminars, workshops, and podcasts available in different Facebook pages and groups. However, it’s not wise to spend money on paid courses on Facebook or other social media — most paid courses teach topics that are freely and easily available online. Remember, those who now run these paid courses themselves improved their skills through free resources at one time. Therefore, using free resources is more effective. Additionally, YouTube is another great platform for learning research methods. You will find countless tutorial videos on data analysis, basic research concepts, and almost every topic. Also, try to participate in international conferences and workshops. Often, these events offer fee waivers, which can be a huge benefit for new researchers. Make use of these free learning opportunities while maintaining your enthusiasm.
Maintain Confidence and Focus
Research is a long-term and patient process. It’s not just about time, but also requires the right mindset, hard work, and dedication. Sometimes, a lack of funding or resources can arise, but there’s no reason to be discouraged. Proper planning, timely use of free resources, and continuous effort are enough to make your research successful. Many Bangladeshi students, with little or no prior research experience, have become successful researchers after going abroad from university or early academic stages. Their experiences prove that despite limited opportunities, with hard work, the right perspective, and unwavering determination, any obstacle can be overcome. Advice for new researchers: never lose hope. Trust in your work and keep making relentless efforts to achieve your goals. Opportunities always exist in any situation, as long as your focus and perspective are right.
