Today, QR codes have become an integral part of our daily lives. From mobile payments and restaurant menus, to hospital records and advertising posters—this small black-and-white square code is everywhere. But did you know that the QR code was invented for a completely different need?

Those Days of 1994

In 1994, Japanese engineer Masahiro Hara, who was working at Denso Wave at the time, was searching for a solution to a major problem in the automotive industry. The traditional barcodes back then could hold very limited information. Yet for car manufacturing, it was necessary to quickly and accurately read detailed information for every single part.

To tackle this challenge, Masahiro Hara invented the Quick Response Code, or QR code for short. It can hold nearly 200 times more information than a regular barcode. Another remarkable feature—QR codes can still be read easily even if part of them is damaged.

Inspired by a Game!

The design of the QR code was inspired by something surprising—the popular Japanese board game “Go”. Masahiro Hara got the idea for creating scannable information patterns from the arrangement of black and white stones in Go, making it possible to scan data quickly and accurately.

The Technology Was Made Open

Perhaps the most fascinating part: Denso Wave did not patent the QR code. That’s why anyone, anywhere could use it freely. As a result, QR code technology spread rapidly across various industries.

QR Codes in Today’s World

Today, QR codes are used in almost every field—not just in car factories. For example:

  • Digital payments (cashless transactions)
  • Reading restaurant menus
  • Storing hospital medical records
  • Event tickets
  • Vaccination certificates
  • Various promotional campaigns

A simple yet visionary invention, the QR code is a shining example of how it can transform the whole landscape of information management around the world.

Small Invention, Big Impact!

Born from the effort to solve a specific problem, the QR code is now an indispensable part of global technology. Masahiro Hara has shown us that sometimes, the simplest ideas can change the world.
