Presenting complex scientific topics in simple language in Bangla is a rare feat, and our own science writer Ishtiak Hossain Chowdhury has managed to do just that. Today, I will introduce you to some of his new books.

Let’s start by getting to know the author—

Ishtiak Hossain Chowdhury was born on May 7, 1992, in Dhaka. He completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the Department of Physics at the University of Dhaka. Later on, he received advanced training in radiation safety from Russia’s Rosatom Technical Academy. Currently, he is working as an Assistant Manager at the state-owned Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited.

So far, he has published seven books— “A Bit of Astronomy,” “Road to Drive a Nuclear Reactor,” “Fun Physics,” “Exoplanet: In Search of Extra-Solar Planets,” “Human Body Theater,” “In Search of Mysterious Superheavy Elements,” and “Rockets: Beyond Gravity.” In addition, he is a regular contributor to the country’s most popular monthly science magazine, Bigganchinta, and to the popular online platform BigganBlog.

Rockets: Beyond Gravity

Adarsha
Printed Price: 400 BDT

Just a few days ago, on October 13, 2024, Elon Musk’s company SpaceX achieved a remarkable milestone. Their engineers’ creation, the gigantic robotic launch tower Mechazilla, grabbed the booster rocket of Starship in mid-air while it was descending to the ground. This breakthrough is a crucial step toward making what seemed impossible—settlement on other planets (like Mars)—a reality. As a result, the enormous process of making reusable rockets has become far easier than ever. Costs will significantly decrease, and the prospects of humans leaving their mark on other worlds keep getting brighter. Perhaps, very soon, rocket technology will permanently change the world as we know it!

Humanity’s relationship with rockets goes back a long way. Rockets are used both for creative purposes, such as space exploration, and for destructive ones—they are unmatched as rocket-powered missiles in warfare, invoking terror on battlefields. On the other hand, they are also celebrated in the world of pure entertainment. Having started out as simple fireworks, rockets have, over centuries, evolved into their present form through the tireless work and ingenuity of countless scientists and engineers. With stunning illustrations and seamless storytelling, Ann Drozd and Jerzy Drozd have brought to life the thrilling journey of rocket technology. Their book covers not only the past, present, and possible future of rockets, but also the fundamental physics behind their operation—presented in an accessible way for readers of all ages. My small endeavor is to ensure that readers in our country do not miss out on the Drozd duo’s remarkable creation.

Welcome to the world of rockets…

Exoplanet: In Search of Extra-Solar Planets

Prothoma
Printed Price: 420 BDT

Each star twinkling as a dot of light in the night sky holds a multitude of mysteries. Are these stars alone? Or, like our sun, do they also have well-ordered families? If planets do exist around these stars, what are they like? And how were they born?

At one time, finding answers to these questions was nearly impossible. But nothing is truly impossible for humanity—this was proven once again when astronomers in the 1990s discovered the first planet outside our solar system. However, these new planets could not be matched to any familiar worlds. For this reason, some started calling this strange planet ‘The Impossible Planet.’ Did this mean everything scientists knew about planets was wrong?

Even after discovering over five thousand exoplanets, many of their mysteries remain unsolved. In her book The Planet Factory, astrophysicist Elizabeth Tasker explores some of the most fascinating secrets of planetary science. Exoplanet: In Search of Extra-Solar Planets is based on that remarkable book.

This book will undoubtedly delight curious readers.

In Search of Mysterious Superheavy Elements

Anwesha Prokashon
Printed Price: 470 BDT

There was a time when scientists thought uranium was the last entry on the periodic table. But no! After more than one and a half centuries, in 1940, two new heavy elements were discovered, forever altering the course of history. The two atomic bombs made of uranium and plutonium brought a devastating end to the bloody Second World War. Their destructive power permanently changed the world.

After the war, Glenn Seaborg and Albert Ghiorso took the search for heavy elements to new heights. Using particle accelerators, these two scientists began discovering new heavy elements one after another. The American obsession with discovering elements went beyond laboratories—even reaching the deadly heart of mushroom clouds formed by nuclear explosions!

For a long time, Americans maintained total dominance in the hunt for heavy elements. But everything changed when the Soviets entered the scene. After becoming the second country to make nuclear weapons, Soviet scientists also threw themselves full-force into the search for heavy elements. Thus, even on the outer edges of the periodic table, an undeclared battle—the Transfarmium War—began between the two superpowers under the shadow of the Cold War. Let’s delve into the thrilling events of those days in the history of science and the full saga of the discovery of heavy elements.

Human Body Theater

Anwesha Prokashon
Printed Price: 535 BDT

Welcome to the Human Body Theater. Soon, you will experience something truly remarkable. It all begins with an introduction to a happy skeleton, who, through fun and laughter, will present to you in a completely new light one of the most ‘frightening’ (!) topics in science: The Human Body.

From microscopic cells to the mysteries of bones big and small, and the various muscles—nothing will be left out of today’s show. One of the highlights is the exquisite dance performed by the Oxygen Fairies. They’ll tell the story of how oxygen from the air travels through the lungs, overcoming obstacles, and reaches every living cell in the body. The process of how carbon dioxide is removed from the body will also be covered!

For much of the act, our skeleton friend will present fascinating facts about the circulatory system—especially the heart and blood. Dive into why the human body is called ‘the most complicated biological machine.’ On the other hand, everything from eating food to digestion to elimination as waste will all unfold, step by step, through the daring adventure of a sandwich.
Dear reader, so why wait? Let’s journey deep into the human body…….
