Some Thoughts on Solar Cars

Many of you have probably heard the term “solar car.” Or maybe you’ve seen some models of this kind in small toy cars. But what exactly is a solar cell? Let’s learn a bit about that. Before talking about solar cars, it’s important to discuss solar energy. A solar cell collects energy from sunlight and transforms it into electrical power. Often, you’ll notice that devices like calculators have solar cells attached. Calculators or watches that use these solar cells do not need any batteries because they gather all the energy needed to operate just from light.

Now imagine if we connect several of these solar cells together — they can generate a lot of electricity, enough to run a car. That’s basically how a solar car works. However, in reality, it’s not quite so simple. The main issue is that since solar cells collect energy from light, it becomes impossible to drive on cloudy days or in the evenings when there is less light. Suppose you took a solar car out for a trip, and suddenly the weather changed, which happens quite often. The sky gets covered with clouds. What would happen then? The car would stop working and come to a halt right there. You can easily imagine the position you’d be in. This is one of the main problems of solar cars.

Recent Advances and the Potential of Solar Cars

In recent times, there have been notable advances in solar car technology. For example, in 2023, companies like Tesla and Lightyear worked on prototypes of solar cars. Lightyear launched their ‘Lightyear 0’ model in the market, which can run up to about 700 kilometers on a single charge. The car’s roof and hood are fitted with solar panels that directly convert sunlight into electricity and store it in the battery, helping to extend the car’s range. Although the price of this car is quite high, it has opened a new door of possibilities in solar car technology.

In 2024, it is estimated that the solar car market will reach around $600 million. Some studies suggest that the global solar car market’s annual growth rate (CAGR) could be 35.2%. This rapid growth is mainly driven by people’s growing interest in eco-friendly fuels and the global trend towards green energy use.

Major Companies Producing Solar Cars

Now let’s learn about some major companies around the world that are making solar cars:

  • Sono Motors (Netherlands): This company has developed a solar car called “Sono Sion.” It’s a vehicle that can charge itself!
  • Lightyear (Netherlands): They have built a state-of-the-art solar car named “Lightyear 0.” This car can travel up to 700 kilometers on a single charge.
  • Opportune Electric Vehicles (Australia): This company has built a solar car called “Stella Era” that can carry four passengers.
  • Hyundai (South Korea): This renowned car company has created a model called “Sonata Hybrid Solar,” which uses both solar panels and an electric motor.
  • Toyota (Japan): This famous Japanese company has developed a hybrid solar car named “Prius Prime.”

Some organizations in Bangladesh are also researching solar cars. Students at Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) have developed several models of solar cars.

An interesting fact is that these companies are not just building cars — they are also inventing new technologies. For example, more efficient solar panels, longer-lasting batteries, and lightweight but strong vehicle frames. Can you imagine, one day these advanced solar cars might run on the streets of Bangladesh? And maybe those cars will be made by Bangladeshi scientists or engineers just like you!

Advanced Battery Technology

There have also been significant advances in the battery technology of solar cars. Instead of lithium-ion batteries, work is underway on solid-state batteries. These types of batteries can store higher amounts of energy, allowing cars to run for longer periods. In addition, efforts are being made to incorporate fast-charging technology for electricity stored from solar power. For example, Tesla’s new prototype car battery can complete an 80% charge in just 15 minutes, providing an extra advantage for long-distance travel.

Recent News

In October 2024, a startup company in Germany unveiled their new prototype solar car. The special feature of this car is that it can travel up to 70 kilometers per day using solar power alone. As a result, there is no need to charge it for daily use. Even when stuck in city traffic jams, its solar panels can keep generating electricity.

In Australia, there is a competition called the ‘World Solar Challenge’ where students build different types of solar car models and take part in tests. In the 2023 competition, one team built a car that could travel 100 kilometers using just 100 grams of battery without sunlight. Such competitions play an important role in the development of solar car technology.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Although solar cars are seen as an environmentally friendly and energy-saving solution, there are still some challenges. The efficiency of solar panels, the high cost of batteries, and choosing optimal locations for maximum output are among the main challenges. However, many countries around the world are conducting research to solve these issues.

Experts believe that the use of solar cars will increase substantially over the next 5–10 years. Improved batteries and lightweight car designs will help increase the range of solar cars. As technology advances, we may see their use grow even more. Research on solar cars continues, and one day, we might see even more advanced and practical solar cars that could be an excellent solution for our environment.

This advanced technology is expected to make solar cars more popular as a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for our future.
