Professor Dr. Mohammad Yamin Hossain
University of Rajshahi.
In the recent Webometrics ranking, the University of Dhaka holds the top position in Bangladesh, with the University of Rajshahi in second place. This ranking is based on the research activities, online presence, and virtual activities of the universities. Lagging behind is not just a problem of a single institution; rather, it reflects the challenges of all universities that are falling behind in research.
The Importance of Research and the Current Situation:
Research is essential for the future development of Bangladesh. The younger generation must be engaged in research oriented towards societal needs, as quality research is what can take a society forward. In many Bangladeshi universities, research activities are not conducted properly. There is a lack of sufficient encouragement and an enabling environment for research. Meanwhile, the opportunity to leverage the country’s demographic dividend, or the power of its youth, is running out. Therefore, now is the time for substantial funding from both government and private sources and for arrangements to be made for advanced training in research.
Steps for Lagging Universities:
To help lagging universities move towards progress, the following steps are essential:
1. Increased Investment in Research and Training
Lagging universities must allocate adequate funds for research and development. For this, support should be sought not only from the government but also from the private sector.
2. Creating an Advanced Research Environment:
It is necessary to ensure modern equipment and ICT facilities in university laboratories. A supportive environment should be created for students so they are encouraged to engage in innovative thinking and activities aimed at social welfare.
3. Enhancing Universities’ Online Presence and Profiles:
In this era, the virtual presence of any individual or institution is extremely important. Lagging universities must improve their online profile so their research and constructive activities reach a global audience. Quality research, publications, and other academic works should be regularly uploaded online.
4. International Collaboration and Networking:
It is essential for lagging universities to establish collaborations with international institutions. Through these collaborations, they can learn advanced research techniques and modern technology. Opportunities for participating in international high-quality research publications and conferences should also be expanded.
5. Initiatives to Make Students Research-Oriented:
Universities should provide adequate encouragement for students to take part in research. Various scholarships, fellowships, and awards can be introduced to spark students’ interest in research.
6. Evaluation and Recognition of Quality Research:
The success of research, both within and outside the university, should be properly evaluated and recognized. Institutional recognition for good work will inspire students to become research-oriented.
The Importance of Online Footprint and the Webometrics Ranking:
In today’s digital era, an institution’s online footprint or virtual presence is extremely important. The Webometrics ranking is determined mainly by universities’ online activities, the number of research papers, the impact of their publications, and their virtual presence. Therefore, it is not only important to conduct research, but also to ensure they are properly uploaded online. Lagging universities should publish their work on online platforms, which will help improve their ranking.
Conclusion:
The role of lagging universities is vital in advancing Bangladesh’s education system and research sector. Through quality research, strong online presence, and international collaboration, these universities can be led towards progress. If the younger generation is given proper guidance and opportunities, they will be able to make significant contributions to the country’s development.
