Dhaka University Receives International Recognition for High-Quality Research
Ittefaq, November 29, 2006
Dhaka University has received international recognition for high-quality research. One of the university’s research papers has ranked 15th among the world’s two thousand most-read research papers. The paper, titled “Construction and Operation of a Simple Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer and Its Use in Measuring Microscopic Deformation,” by the Physics Department, was published in the world-renowned research journal “Optics and Laser Technology.” This Netherlands-based journal selects research papers from more than 2,000 researchers worldwide—covering 24 core “subject areas”—including those from the USA, UK, and other countries. The list of the top 25 research papers was recently published on the ScienceDirect website.
The research was conducted in 1999 by S.A. Jasmin, a master’s student under the supervision of the current Pro-Vice Chancellor and senior professor of the Physics Department, Dr. A.F.M. Yusuf Haider, and Professor K.M. Abedin from the same department, as a master’s thesis. Their innovative method enables observation of microscopic deformation of objects caused by various factors, such as pressure, temperature, and force.
According to the website, the research paper was published in August 2000 and made available online in November of that year. ScienceDirect’s report shows that in the July–September quarter of 2004, among the top 25 most-read research papers, the UK ranked first, China second, Taiwan third, and Dhaka University’s research paper claimed the 15th position.
When contacted regarding this achievement, Professor A.F.M. Yusuf Haider stated that this proves Dhaka University produces world-class research despite limited resources and facilities. He appealed for all-out cooperation from well-wishers in the university’s research endeavors, saying that there is no alternative to high-quality research to make Bangladesh well-known on the global stage.
