📌 Brief Introduction
Rising from a middle-class family in Rajshahi, Maidul Islam Palash is now working as a researcher at the Harvard Medical School, Boston.
Rajshahi Cadet College → University of Dhaka, Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology → icddr,b → Completed his Ph.D. in Cardiology Research from the University of Washington, and he is now conducting important research on heart disease and cancer.

🎤 Tell us about yourself

Maidul Islam Palash: I am a biomedical researcher. From a young age, my curiosity for science led me to research. I am especially interested in understanding the causes of human diseases and finding cures. My current research mainly focuses on heart disease (heart failure) and cancer.

🔬 What is your research about?

Every organ in our body contains thousands of proteins that function only when properly folded. But if there’s a problem with folding, cellular functions get disrupted and diseases develop.
I am investigating—

  • How problems in protein folding make heart disease more severe
  • How drugs used in cancer treatment (chemotherapy/immunotherapy) can harm the heart
  • And what ways might exist to prevent this damage

🌍 How will your research benefit us?

  • Every year, nearly 20 million people die from heart disease globally, among which about 13 million are heart failure patients. My work is especially important for them.
  • Many cancer survivors later die from heart disease, one cause being the drugs used in cancer treatment. Through my research, it may become possible in the future to develop treatment methods that cure cancer without harming the heart.

🧪 Special Research Experience

  • I worked with mouse models to understand heart failure.
  • I was surprised to find that young mice with the same mutation could suddenly die of heart failure. There are many examples around us of sudden deaths linked to the same process.
  • Additionally, mice that exercised and practiced intermittent fasting recovered from heart failure more quickly than others.
➡️ This hands-on lesson showed that a healthy heart requires proper nutrition, exercise, and a conscientious lifestyle.

👨‍🔬 What qualities does a scientist need?

  • Curiosity: Always asking questions—”Why did this happen?”, “How did it happen?”
  • Patience and perseverance: The mindset to persist despite repeated failures
  • A spirit of helping others: The main goal of research should be the welfare of humanity

🌟 Message for Young People

“Science is not just work in a laboratory, but the pursuit of curiosity.
Dream big and work hard with patience.
Small efforts will one day lead to big discoveries.
If you pursue study/research as a passion rather than simply a job, success will surely come.”

🧬 Dr. Md. Moydul Islam: A Young Biomedical Researcher at Harvard Medical School

📌 Brief Introduction
Born and raised in a middle-class family in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, Dr. Maidul Islam Palash has become a promising researcher at Harvard Medical School, Boston.
His academic journey: Rajshahi Cadet College → University of Dhaka (Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology) → Two years of research at icddr,b → Ph.D. in Cardiology Research from the University of Washington.
Currently, his research focuses on heart failure and cancer. His passion has always been to understand the root causes of diseases and find better treatments.

🎤 Tell us about yourself

Maidul Islam Palash: I am a biomedical researcher, passionate about exploring the causes of human diseases and finding their remedies. My current research mainly focuses on heart failure and cancer therapy-induced cardiac injury.

🔬 What is your research about?

Proteins in our organs (heart, liver, brain, etc.) need to fold into specific shapes to function properly. Misfolded proteins disrupt cell function and lead to disease.
My work focuses on the following topics:

  • How misfolded proteins make heart failure worse
  • Why cancer treatments (chemotherapy, immunotherapy) often damage the heart
  • Finding ways to prevent cardiac injury in cancer patients

🌍 How does your research benefit humanity?

  • According to WHO, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide (~20 million annually). About two-thirds of these deaths (13 million) are from heart failure. My research addresses this urgent global health issue.
  • Cancer therapies save lives, but many survivors later suffer from heart diseases caused by the treatment itself. My work aims to develop safer cancer drugs—that fight cancer without harming the heart—ensuring long-term survival with a healthier life.

🧪 A Special Research Experience

  • In cardiovascular labs, we often use mouse models because their heart architecture closely resembles humans.
  • I worked on both surgically-induced and genetically-induced heart failure in mice.
  • Fascinatingly, I observed young mice with genetic mutations appearing healthy one day and suddenly dying from heart failure the next—similar to unexpected deaths we see in people.
  • I also found that mice on exercise routines and intermittent fasting recovered from heart failure much faster than others.
➡️ Lesson: Healthy lifestyle, proper diet, and regular exercise are indispensable for heart health—especially with a family history of heart disease.

👨‍🔬 What qualities should a scientist have?

  • Curiosity: Always ask why and how.
  • Patience & Perseverance: Research often involves failures before success.
  • Compassion: The ultimate goal of science should be human welfare.

🌟 Your message to young learners in Bangladesh

“Science is not just about lab work—it is about nurturing curiosity.
Dream big, work with patience, and turn challenges into opportunities.
Take science as a passion, not merely as a profession, and success will follow.”
