Weight Loss Drugs: Miracle or New Risk?

The relationship between weight and beauty or wellness is centuries old. Throughout history, people have tried various methods to lose excess weight. But in recent years, medical science has opened up a completely new path. Some medications originally developed for diabetes—names like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro—have now become miraculous solutions for weight loss.

These drugs have become so popular so quickly that shortages appeared in the market just days after approval. According to a survey in the United States, one in eight adults has used these medications at least once. It’s not just prescribed patients—everyone from fashion-conscious celebrities to everyday people are searching the internet to get their hands on them.

These drugs primarily work by mimicking a gut-derived chemical called GLP-1. GLP-1 increases insulin, reduces blood sugar, and suppresses appetite. Initially used for diabetes control, studies have shown that they are remarkably effective for weight loss. A 2015 trial found that patients lost 5 to 6 percent of their weight in one year. And a large study in 2021 found that users of the ingredient semaglutide lost an average of 15 kilograms over a year and a half.

But weight loss is not their only strength. Research shows they are also effective in reducing the risk of heart and kidney disease. In a 2024 trial conducted across 41 countries, these drugs significantly lowered the risk of heart failure in overweight heart patients. That same year, Wegovy was approved in the United States to reduce the risk of death from heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Even Ozempic received approval for the prevention of kidney disease.

The experiences of users are also striking. Many report a reduced appetite, as well as a diminished desire for alcohol, tobacco, or other addictive substances. Some even claim it helps relieve migraine or arthritis pain. Lab results suggest these drugs can protect nerve cells, indicating potential future uses in treating conditions like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.

But alongside all these promising aspects lies a darker reality. Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, or nausea. In more severe cases, there is a risk of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease. Most concerning is that as weight decreases, muscle mass can also decline—by as much as 10 percent. As people age, this loss of muscle can increase weakness, mobility issues, and the risk of fractures.

Another complex issue is pregnancy. Although these drugs are not approved for use during pregnancy, their hormonal effects may increase the chance of conception or make birth control medications less effective. The impact on the fetus is still not fully understood. Some studies show there is no risk, but recent data suggests pregnancy complications, such as an increased likelihood of pre-eclampsia, may arise.

So it becomes clear: while these drugs are life-changing for some, they also create new risks. In society, thinness may be seen as desirable, but it does not guarantee a healthy life. If weight loss comes at the cost of other harm to the body, it cannot truly be called wellness.

In the end, one truth stands out—no drug is 100 percent safe. While these weight loss medications are giving hope to millions, uncontrolled use could also create new health crises. That’s why, around this miraculous scientific breakthrough, we must exercise level-headed judgment, critical understanding, and most of all—caution.
