Asif Rahman is a Bangladeshi researcher, currently working as a Research Analyst at the Department of Medicine in the West Virginia University Research Corporation, USA. He completed his SSC from Motijheel Ideal School & College in 2009 and HSC from Notre Dame College, Dhaka in 2011. Later, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering (Textile Management) from Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX).

After initially working in the textile sector, he developed a keen interest in data-driven and healthcare-based research. This passion led him to pursue a Master’s program in Industrial Engineering at West Virginia University in 2022, with a primary focus on Data Science and Analytics in Healthcare. After completing his master’s in 2024, he joined the university’s research corporation.

Currently, his main research goal is to use data science and machine learning in healthcare to assist in disease diagnosis, risk prediction, and efficient allocation of health resources. He is directly contributing to state-level healthcare improvement initiatives in the United States.

Question: What is the main topic of your research?
Answer:
The main focus of my research is to improve healthcare using Data Science and Machine Learning. By analyzing patient treatment data, I try to identify patterns that help doctors and researchers make better decisions. For example, it helps to predict a patient’s risk of developing a specific illness in the future, allowing for preventive measures in advance. Similarly, analyzing region-based disease trends helps allocate health resources more efficiently.

Question: Could you tell us a bit about your master’s level research?
Answer:
During my master’s thesis at West Virginia University, I researched data from about 20 million U.S. COVID patients. It was an NIH-funded project. The research aimed to analyze mental health changes post-COVID and predict the risk of newly developing mental health conditions. This work inspired me to think deeper about data-driven solutions in healthcare.

Question: What type of research are you currently involved in?
Answer:
Currently, I am researching pulmonary hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and other lung diseases. I am also working on sleep apnea in rural West Virginia and a CDC-funded vaccine project that seeks to predict vaccine uptake trends across various communities.

Question: How do you think your research benefits society?
Answer:
My goal is to make healthcare more efficient and accessible. Through data analysis, doctors and policymakers can make faster and more accurate decisions. This enables disease prevention, correct diagnosis, and equitable distribution of health resources. In the long run, it helps build a proactive and human-centered healthcare system.

Question: Would you like to share any special experiences from your research life?
Answer:
While working with data from 20 million COVID patients, I realized that data is more than just numbers—it represents stories of people’s lives and struggles. The mental health impact of COVID deeply moved me and changed my perspective on research.

Question: What qualities do you think are essential in a scientist?
Answer:
In my opinion, a scientist must have three qualities—curiosity, patience and perseverance, and integrity. Research starts with questions, takes a long journey, and its results impact society. So a scientist must be honest and dedicated to the welfare of humanity.

Question: What is your message for young students in Bangladesh?
Answer:
Never lose your curiosity and don’t be afraid of failure. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Science is not a solitary pursuit—collaboration and mutual support are the true keys to progress.

In my view, three qualities are essential: curiosity, patience and perseverance, and integrity. Research begins with asking questions, often requires long-term commitment, and has real-world consequences. Scientists must therefore be honest, persistent, and guided by the greater good.

Question: What message would you like to share with young students in Bangladesh who aspire to pursue science?
Answer:
Never lose your curiosity and do not fear failure. Every setback is a step toward success. Do not hesitate to ask for help—science is a collaborative journey. Supporting others and being open to receiving support are fundamental strengths for both good scientists and good human beings.
