Ismail Hossain is a computer scientist and educator, currently serving as a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of Denver in the United States. He began his teaching career as a Lecturer at BRAC University. Later, he earned his master’s degree from George Mason University. Alongside his academic pursuits, he has also worked as a Full Stack Software Engineer at MissionSquare Retirement, where he gained extensive experience in developing and securing large-scale software systems.

His primary research areas are artificial intelligence, computer vision, and multimodal models. In particular, he is working on AI-driven solutions for detecting lung diseases through X-ray image analysis. Additionally, his research covers models capable of understanding both language and images, automatic summarization of educational videos, healthcare-support chatbots, and road safety technologies. He is currently working in the US and has presented his research internationally.

💬 Q&A Session:

Question: To start, can you tell us about yourself? How did your professional journey begin?
Answer: My professional journey began at BRAC University as a Lecturer. The experience of working closely with students deeply inspired me. Later, I completed my master’s degree at George Mason University, which further strengthened my research and academic path. After my studies, I worked as a Full Stack Software Engineer at MissionSquare Retirement. Currently, I am a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of Denver, teaching courses on programming, data structures, algorithms, and AI.

Question: What is your research focus?
Answer: I mainly work on technologies that make physicians’ jobs easier. Specifically, I am trying to train computers to detect lung issues from X-ray images, so that even hospitals with limited resources can diagnose diseases quickly. For this research, I received the Runner-Up award at FMLDS 2025. We are also developing multimodal models that can analyze images and text together. Additionally, we are researching better language understanding, automatic summarization of educational videos, healthcare chatbots for rural areas, and road safety technologies.

Question: What is your message for young students in Bangladesh?
Answer: Research and innovation play a vital role in advancing a country. Many students believe that CGPA is everything; however, in reality, research experience, quality publications, strong recommendation letters, and a well-crafted statement of purpose are much more important for higher studies. Even with a comparatively lower CGPA, it’s possible to obtain full funding for a master’s or PhD abroad if you have strong research skills. I am interested in working with young researchers and always try to help find sponsors for conference or journal fees, so that financial challenges do not hinder research.
