In our interview series with emerging scientists, we spoke with scientist Jannatul Shahrin Shoshi. She works at the Optics Lab of North South University. She conducts research in optics/photonics. Read her interview below:
What is the subject of your research?
My research area is optics or photonics, where I mainly focus on optical manipulation, especially optical sorting and optical pulling. In this field, I experiment by using different particles and building various substrates or specially designed metasurfaces.
The goal of my research is to explore how these technologies can be applied in different industries, the healthcare sector, and for the welfare of humanity.
How does your research work benefit us?
Optical manipulation technology can play a vital role in various industries, healthcare, and pharmaceutical companies. This technology is used in nanomaterial processing and high-precision manufacturing, where nanoscale components can be precisely isolated and positioned.
In the health sector, optical sorting allows for the rapid and accurate separation of specific types of cells. In pharmaceutical companies, optical sorting is used to prepare high-purity samples, which is essential for drug testing and research. Optical pulling technology can transport small drug particles directly to targeted cells. In this way, drug delivery can become more precise and effective. Additionally, optical pulling plays an important role in biomolecular interaction studies, which aids in analyzing the efficacy of new drugs. In summary, my research is dedicated to human welfare.
Would you share any personal experiences from your research work?
I became interested in research while taking an Electromagnetism course with Dr. Mahdi Rahman Chowdhury at our university. At the beginning of my research journey, there was something that really surprised me. Since childhood, I watched various science fiction movies. In those movies, you would often see a kind of light beam coming from a UFO, and aliens would slowly descend through this beam without touching any stairs or anything, and in the same way, they would ascend back into the UFO through the beam of light.
I found a similarity between this and optical manipulation, which I found very interesting. In optical manipulation, light is also projected onto an object from a source. The object may move toward the source (pulling force), away from the source (pushing force), or sideways (lateral force).
Later, I became interested in working on this. I worked on it and managed to achieve results in the Rayleigh range by projecting light from different angles. From a single setup, I observed three types of forces—pulling, pushing, and lateral—in three different particles.
What qualities do you think a scientist should have?
In my opinion, what is needed for research is curiosity, hard work, and patience. Often, after working hard for a long time, one may face failure. Still, one must have the mentality to learn from those failures and keep moving forward. In a nutshell, one must persevere. Some result will come eventually. Moreover, one must be honest about their research outcomes so that others can benefit from their work in the future.
Do you have any messages or advice for young Bangladeshi students who wish to pursue a career in science?
Science and research are open to everyone. To do research, you don’t necessarily need to have a high CGPA. Anyone can do research if they have dedication and interest.
And I believe that to advance Bangladesh, more young people should get involved in research. There are opportunities to become a great scientist in Bangladesh as well—it just takes focus, patience, and hard work. Through their efforts, our country’s scientific endeavors will grow and reach new horizons. So, you should dream, and one day those dreams will come true!
