Dr. Muhammad Abdul Malek completed his graduation in Economics from the University of Dhaka, after which he began his higher studies and research in Rural and Development Economics. For nearly two decades, he has been involved in research activities related to rural development and economic policy both in Bangladesh and internationally. Alongside his work with Bangladesh’s governmental organization BARD (Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development) and the Comilla region, he has also contributed to the Research and Evaluation Division of BRAC, the world’s leading NGO.
Dr. Malek’s research projects have received funding from internationally recognized donor organizations such as 3ie, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Australian DFAT, International Growth Center (IGC), and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Development Economics and South-East Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tsukuba, Japan. His main research areas are rural development, policy formulation, and innovating practical economic models.

Question: How did you get involved in this research?
Answer: After completing my graduation in Economics from the University of Dhaka, I started my higher studies in Rural and Development Economics. Later, I became involved in practical research with BARD in Bangladesh and in the Comilla region.
Question: What is the main objective of your research?
Answer: To develop effective economic models for rural development and to utilize research findings in policy formulation. I aim for research outcomes to directly benefit rural communities.
Question: What was your experience working on international projects?
Answer: I have implemented many important projects supported by 3ie, BMGF, Australian DFAT, IGC, and JSPS. This experience enabled me to conduct research at the global standard.
Question: What is your main focus while working in Japan?
Answer: At the University of Tsukuba, I am involved in research and teaching in Development Economics and South-East Asian Studies. My main focus is on effective policy formulation and the development of economic models.
Question: In a 2018 interview, you mentioned a 5 billion Taka project. How was it implemented?
Answer: Yes, the project budget was 5 billion Taka, which was used for various research activities and practical applications.
