In this interview series, Tanzib Ehsan Shonglap has given us an interview. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the renowned University of Glasgow in Scotland. In addition, he completed his Master’s in Nuclear Engineering in Russia and obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the Islamic University of Technology. He has shared some important aspects of his research with us. Read his interview to learn more:

First, we would like to know about you.

I am currently pursuing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the renowned University of Glasgow in Scotland. Previously, I earned my Master’s in Nuclear Engineering from Russia and my Bachelor’s degree from the Islamic University of Technology. Before starting my PhD, I worked as a lecturer at two universities in Dhaka.

What is your research topic?

We are looking forward to a future where devices themselves will use their users as a source of energy. I am currently working on such an energy harvesting device called a Triboelectric Nanogenerator. We are all somewhat familiar with static electricity. For instance, when we comb our hair with a comb during winter or in dry weather, sometimes we hear a crackling sound. This sound is produced due to the friction between the comb and hair, which creates opposite charges and thus a voltage difference or electricity. This phenomenon was observed about 2,500 years ago, but the triboelectric nanogenerator device was only invented recently, in 2012. This device can be charged as we walk or move. Its applications are extensive, including in waves, sensors, wearable electronics, airplanes, and more. This technology also holds potential for medical fields, enabling devices like pacemakers, wheelchairs, and other medical devices to generate power from the body itself.
Over time, researchers have come up with new ideas using various modes such as contact-separation, sliding, rolling, and so on. Essentially, when two layers come into contact and then separate, their surface texture, material properties, friction, and electron affinity play a key role in generating electricity.
My ongoing research is being conducted jointly with the MoFEM research team, aiming to improve the performance of this device. This device is capable of harvesting energy from the environment, which provides a new and renewable way to supply electricity, thus reducing dependence on batteries or mains power sources. However, as an energy source, its use is particularly feasible for mobile and portable devices. Therefore, the global research community is placing increasing emphasis on further extensive research into various configurations of this device in order to maximize its efficiency. I am currently developing a computational module for the device to help reduce the need for repeated physical experiments. As a result, the speed and effectiveness of research will increase further and the chances of rapidly obtaining improved, eco-friendly versions of this device will grow.

Do you have any message or advice for young students in Bangladesh who wish to pursue science?

My message to young students in Bangladesh is: Explore deeply and gain hands-on experience in any area of science and technology that interests you. Participate in research projects at your school, college, or university and let your creativity shine.
Science is not just about information, but about developing problem-solving skills. Therefore, it is important to be innovative and thoughtful, and to choose your preferred field from among many options. Remember, failure is a part of learning; learn from it and keep moving forward. You are the scientists and innovators of tomorrow, who will play a vital role in making the world a better place.
