In Search of the Theory of Everything

Evening is falling over the sky of Dhaka. In a corner of the university library, Arnob is immersed in the pages of a book. With curious eyes, he searches for the answer to a question—”Is there a single rule that governs everything in this universe?” Thoughts like these often cross his mind. But Arnob is not alone; for generations, scientists and philosophers have been haunted by this very question—does a ‘Theory of Everything’ truly exist?

From Albert Einstein to Stephen Hawking—all dreamed of a universal theory that could explain everything: from the motion of planets and stars to the behavior of the tiniest atoms. Einstein’s general theory of relativity successfully explained gravity, while quantum mechanics revealed the world of subatomic particles. Yet, a vast chasm remains between these two realms.

Professor Dr. Mahbubur Rahman of the Department of Physics at the University of Dhaka says, “A universal theory that can explain both gravity and quantum mechanics is the most coveted goal for scientists. However, its discovery still eludes us.”

Recently, ‘String Theory’ has gained much attention. According to this theory, the origin of all particles is tiny vibrating strings. However, this theory is yet to be proven in the laboratory. On the other hand, the ‘Loop Quantum Gravity’ theory explains gravity by proposing that space-time itself is made up of minuscule loops. This, too, remains at the stage of experiments and investigation.

“I believe that humanity will one day surely discover a theory capable of explaining the entire universe,” says Arnob, a physics student at the University of Dhaka. Many other students like him share this hope and optimism.

The legendary physicist Stephen Hawking once said, “Our goal is to find a simple and beautiful rule that explains everything in the universe.” He considered this the greatest dream of science.

Professor Dr. Nusrat Jahan of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Dhaka believes, “Such a theory would be important not just for science, but also for philosophy. It may help us find the meaning of our own existence.”

Perhaps, through the efforts of today’s young scientists and students, this mystery of the universe will one day be revealed. For now, however, humanity’s endless journey continues—pressing forward at the intersection of science and philosophy, in search of the ‘rule of everything’.
