Dr. Amit Chakma is the 10th President and Vice-Chancellor of Western University (UWO) in London, Canada. Previously, he served as Vice-President, Academic and Provost at the University of Waterloo, where he was also a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Prior to that, he held positions at the University of Regina as Dean of Engineering and Vice-President (Research). He has also taught as a Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary.
Dr. Chakma completed his Diploma from the Algerian Petroleum Institute (1982) and his Master of Applied Science (1984) and PhD (Chemical Engineering, 1987) from the University of British Columbia. His primary research areas are petroleum research, energy management, environmental systems, and gas processing. He has published over 100 research papers.
Dr. Chakma is also the Chairwoman of the board at Health Force Ontario Marketing and Recruitment Agency and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is a member of the Chakma community from the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh. He lives in London, Ontario, with his wife Meena and their two children, Justin and Hiroshi.

Q: How did your early education influence your journey in engineering and research?
A: My education at the Algerian Petroleum Institute and the University of British Columbia gave me a strong foundation in chemical engineering. It inspired my interest in petroleum research, gas processing, and environmental technology.
Q: How did you transition from teaching in academia to university leadership?
A: I have always believed that higher education has the power to transform society. Serving as Dean, Vice-President, and President allowed me to help shape policy, support research, and create opportunities for students and professors.
Q: What are your main research contributions?
A: My work mainly focuses on mass transfer, gas separation, and petroleum waste management. I have developed models for energy and environmental systems and contributed to greenhouse gas control technologies. My published research aims to offer practical solutions.
Q: How does your background influence your leadership philosophy at UWO?
A: Growing up in the Chittagong Hill Tracts taught me resilience and the value of community. I place importance on collaboration, global partnerships, and creating an environment where research and education can work together.
Q: What are your goals for UWO in the coming years?
A: I want UWO to be internationally recognized as a leading institution through innovative research programs and high-quality education. I want to strengthen global collaboration to contribute to knowledge growth and address social challenges.
