In today’s rapidly changing industrial world, it’s rare to find a professional who excels in technical expertise, leadership, and mentoring the next generation. M S Hossen is a remarkable exception. With over 17 years of international experience across oil & gas, petrochemicals, LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), hydrogen energy, and the manufacturing sector, he is currently working in Texas, USA, at INVISTA (Koch Industries) as the Electrical & Instrumentation Reliability Lead. Over his long journey, he has been more than just an engineer—he has been a researcher, innovator, and motivator for the youth.

biggani.org: First, could you tell us how your professional journey began?
M S Hossen: Currently, I am working as Electrical & Instrumentation Reliability Lead at INVISTA (Koch Industries), Texas. For over 17 years, I have gained experience across the world in oil & gas, petrochemicals, LNG, hydrogen, and manufacturing sectors—both engineering and research. This long journey taught me not just about technical solutions but also the importance of innovative thinking in a global context.

Hossen: I manage reliability and asset integrity programs, which are crucial for the safety and operational efficiency of industrial plants. Under my leadership, our team has consistently maintained over 90% plant uptime and achieved millions of dollars in cost savings.

Hossen: My primary research focuses on sustainable energy use in industry and power systems, smart maintenance, and corrosion prevention. I am especially proud of two major projects—

  • Innovation of pipeline support pads that prevent corrosion.
  • Development of AI and IoT-based smart systems to make power and solar energy systems more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Some of my notable research publications include: Integrating IoT and AI For Predictive Maintenance in Smart Power Grid Systems (2023)—demonstrating how AI and IoT can reduce power loss and carbon emissions in grids; Current trends in photovoltaic thermal systems (2024)—a comprehensive review of new technologies in solar energy generation;

biggani.org: Which of your innovations has had the most impact?
Hossen: I developed a thermoplastic-based pipeline support pad that helps prevent corrosion. This solution has received international recognition and was showcased at Lamar University’s Idea Competition.

biggani.org: Could you tell us about your experience in hydrogen energy?
Hossen: While working at Accelera by Cummins, I was involved in the early stage development of one of the largest hydrogen installations in the United States. A special highlight was the initial site visit for the 35 MW HyLYZER hydrogen installation at the Linde Buffalo Plant—which plays a significant role in green hydrogen production and industrial decarbonization.

Hossen: Dream big, but start small. Learn a bit every day, and never give up. Remember, you can contribute to global science and technology even from Bangladesh.

Explanation of Some Technical Terms

LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) – Technology for storing and transporting natural gas in liquid form by supercooling it. When converted to liquid, its volume is greatly reduced, making transportation easier.

Hydrogen Energy / Green Hydrogen – The process of using hydrogen gas as fuel to generate electricity or heat. “Green hydrogen” refers to hydrogen produced from renewable sources (such as solar or wind) via water electrolysis with zero carbon emissions.

Petrochemicals – Chemical products produced from oil or natural gas, used to make plastics, synthetic rubber, fertilizers, etc.

Decarbonization – The process of reducing carbon dioxide emissions in industry or energy systems. This is crucial for the environment.

Reliability Lead – A senior engineer responsible for ensuring that large industrial equipment remains safe and efficient over the long term.

Asset Integrity – Maintaining the structural safety and performance of equipment or installations throughout their lifecycle in a factory or plant.

Plant Uptime – A metric that measures what percentage of time a plant or factory is operational and productive.

Predictive Maintenance – Techniques that use sensor data and analytics to detect and repair potential equipment faults before failure, reducing the risk of unexpected breakdowns.

Thermoplastic – A type of plastic that softens when heated and hardens when cooled. It is easy to mold and can be recycled and reused multiple times.

Pipeline Support Pad – A special pad placed beneath pipelines to avoid water accumulation, prevent corrosion, and increase the durability of the pipeline.

AI – Artificial Intelligence – Technology that enables computers to learn, analyze, and make decisions like humans.

IoT – Internet of Things – A network that connects sensors and equipment via the Internet for data exchange.

Smart Grid – Modern power distribution system that uses digital technology to efficiently manage electricity supply and demand.

Photovoltaic Thermal (PVT) System – A solar panel technology that generates both electricity and heat at the same time.

Building-Integrated Photovoltaics – A method of installing solar panels on the roof or walls of buildings to turn the whole building into a power-generating system.

Hossen: I have worked in engineering and research across the globe for over 17 years. From Oil & Gas to Hydrogen energy, each experience has taught me the importance of innovation on a global scale.

Hossen: I lead programs that maintain asset integrity (ensuring that industrial equipment remains structurally safe) and plant reliability.
