Ultra-Violet Radiation (UVR) From Tube Light

Currently, a public health issue is being discussed repeatedly. That is whether the ultraviolet radiation (UVR) emitted from tube lights or fluorescent lamps is harmful to our bodies. This is because UVR is responsible for skin cancer, which poses a threat to human health.

The UVR emitted from tube lights or fluorescent lamps is produced from low-pressure mercury vapor. When an electrical discharge is passed through the mercury vapor, UVR is generated—most of the emitted energy has a wavelength of 254 nm. This falls within the UV-C spectrum (180-280 nm). In fluorescent bulbs, the 254 nm radiation is used to excite the phosphor, which is coated on the inside of the bulb’s glass envelope. The phosphor then emits visible light (different phosphors emit different colors), and the UV-C rays that are not absorbed by the phosphor are instead absorbed by the glass wall. Additionally, the mercury discharge emits light at other wavelengths such as 365 nm, which falls within the UV-A spectrum (315-400 nm). This UV-A radiation is not absorbed by the phosphor and most of it passes through the lamp wall and is released into the environment.

In 1988, the NRPB conducted extensive research on UVR. They determined exposure limits for harmful effects such as photokeratitis, erythema, etc. Additionally, a connection between UVR and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) was also demonstrated.
